Behold the 2024 Republican Party platform

Apparently the Republican National Committee, under the direction of Comrade Trump, has decided to do away with long, boring fights over the party platform at this year's Republican Convention. I actually think this is a good idea, since party platforms are meaningless these days anyway. But what will replace it?

The answer is: a platform handed down by Trump and prefaced by a 20-point listicle written by Trump himself. Here it is:

I note that this list contains no mention of abortion or mifepristone or IVF; no mention of energy efficient appliances; no mention of NATO; no mention of China; no mention of Russia; no mention of vaccines; no mention of Fauci; no mention of crypto; no mention of health care; no mention of climate change or the environment in any way; no mention of the national debt; no mention of education; no mention of technology even in passing; and no mention of sharks. I guess that stuff is all either too boring for Trump or else too divisive for a guy who's suddenly trying to appear more reasonable.

The full platform does mention some of this stuff, though not in much detail since it's only ten pages long. Still, the listicle is clearly what Republicans want everyone to pay attention to, and I have to say that its lack of any reference to abortion is quite a bold change for a Republican statement of principles. Hell, even the longer platform document barely mentions abortion, saying only that Republicans "stand for life," oppose late term abortions, and think states should be in control. It's remarkable what the MAGA base will let Trump get away with. I suppose it's because he's more or less admitted that he's lying for political purposes.

UPDATE: Sorry, but I was initially under the impression that the listicle was the whole platform. It's not. It's just the preface to a ten-page platform that covers more topics. I've corrected the text.

Trump is so full of bullshit that he sucks the very oxygen from a room.

I realize that the above comment is not my most reasoned statement ever made, but I have a knee-jerk reaction to the guy in any way, shape, or form in which he intrudes into my consciousness.

  2. Justin

That’s not so bad. He can’t actually affect most of those and some are completely impractical so… just the normal campaign bullshit.

Sad to say, the Democratic Party platform isn’t all that interesting either. Maybe getting nothing done would be ok. No one noticed so far!

    1. MattBallAZ

My question is: why didn't he do all this when he was in power and had an R House and Senate?
I assume he's right that enough people will forget he actually was President....

      1. LactatingAlgore

the tax cuts & jobs act was supposed to most of this by itself, via dynamic scoring.

repealing obummercare would have done the rest, but john mc cain hated trump.

        1. KawSunflower

trump hated John McCain & Jerry Nadler. They both knew his many lawless activities in NYC & rightly despised & opposed him.

    2. mudwall jackson

getting nothing done? perhaps you slept through the first two years of biden's term when democrats control of both houses. on the other hand it's a tad more difficult to get government to function when one chamber is in the hands of disciples of the man who gave the world the golden toilet.

  3. Yikes

Come on, you got conned, this isn't actually adopted by the Republican party? I mean, of course idiot Trump mouths off this nonsense daily, but really? I didn't see a cite.

  4. cld

Sounds like a list of personal affirmations.

This is just trying to claim they're not all about Project 2025.

On the basis of the constitutional delineation of the House's (and Congress's general) powers of the purse, has anyone challenged the executive ability to adjust tariffs?

  6. D_Ohrk_E1

    Deport millions = inflation
    Raise tariffs = inflation
    Large tax cuts = inflation
    Stop outsourcing = inflation

    Eliminate inflation = --> Deflation

So the questions are, what is his economic policy and why is he so stupid?

    1. KawSunflower

Because he has already confirmed that his followers are stupid- he loves "the poorly educated."

Especially about tariffs & tax cuts for the very rich, & their effects on the economy.

    2. NotCynicalEnough

There is 0 chance that anybody voting for Trump knows or cares that his policy proposals have mutually exclusive results. His voters fall into 2 blocks, the majority who are fine with Trump as long as he advances straight, white, christian, male supremacy and malefactors of great wealth that don't care about anything other than paying less in taxes. OK, that and being able to poison air and water with impunity. After all, there will always be someplace they can buy where the air and water isn't toxic.

    >> Can you imagine even trying to do this?<<

I can imagine Reinhard Heydrich clone Stephen Miller trying. (Look at pictures. It’s the same guy).

    1. Joel

I always thought Miller looked like Goebbels. I got banned on FB for a week for posting side-by-side pix of them, so FB agrees.

Yes. and as has been pointed out in Kos, his doctor has a LOT of other doctors available of varying specialties - INCLUDING a neurologist on the team. JFC - I'm not the POTUS and I have a team coordinated by my PCP, all in very close by where I live in Bellingham. My team includes my PCP (DO), a neurologist to keep track of a couple of nerve sheath calcifications, a skin specialist due to living for a couple of decades in the tropics, a urologist, etc.

I also noted in on Kos article that there really is a constantly staffed medical office. Ronny Jackson ran his pill mill from there - no need for much documentation or even stepping out to a local civilian pharmacy.

Democrats ought to place on their platform a promise to create a system to override SCOTUS decisions, by way of the Exceptions Clause. Allow senior judges of the circuit courts to review and, by a 2/3rds vote, override any SCOTUS decisions. This makes "court-packing" moot and forces SCOTUS to render decisions that cross ideological lines, all without breaking the checks and balances of the three branches.

    1. Yehouda

      That is reasonable approcah.

It should be done automatically in all cases where SCOTUS overrides the congress, and also allow other ways of forcing such review (e.g. the President, A state legislature).

Not sure about 2/3rd vote, I would make it simple majority.

“2. CARRY OUT THE LARGEST DEPORTATION OPERATION IN AMERICAN HISTORY.”

In the debate, Trump was asked how he would accomplish this. He didn’t have an answer.

    1. LactatingAlgore

if not deportation, then summary execution of suspected undocumented individuals on the street as they walk by deputized paramilitaries (i.e. militia groups) & various vigilantes.

  10. kennethalmquist

According to The American Conservative, Trump’s people on the platform committee, “refused to show delegates the language until the morning of—and then blocked amendments, turning the whole thing into an up or down vote.” I get the impression that they hadn’t realized that Trump was an authoritarian leader before now.

  11. Jasper_in_Boston

I wonder, if he's elected, will the GOP's deep pockets actually allow his economic plans to proceed. Yes, that crowd is always up for a tax cut, but it'll be mayhem given the effect on interest rates.

  12. akapneogy

Like "The unspeakable chasing the inedible" (French reaction to fox hunting), my reaction to the platform would be: Hypocrisy or the tribute vice is paying to virtue.

  13. Laertes

    "No mention of Russia."

Sure it does. See where he says "prevent world war III?" That's Republican for "end support for Ukraine."

  14. Yehouda

The comments suggest people take the "Republican Party platform" too seriously, as if this is what Trump intends to do if he wins.
If Trump wins, he we will do what he wans to do ("be strong", i.e. suppress the population like his pals Putin/Xi/Kim do). The rest is just noise.

      1. Yehouda

That distracts from the main danger.
When you get a militia patrolling the streets looking for "vermins" (his words), "grift and gratuities" are a relatively minor issue.

      2. LactatingAlgore

with the trump post office hotel closed, the albemarle estate in virginia is going to be teeming with turbanheaded guys & thicknecked slavs.

As to the tax exemption of tips, I think the logic would be something like this: (I) gifts are not subject to income tax, (ii) tips are generally voluntary and thus are somewhat like gifts to the server, (III) therefore tips, like gifts, should be exempt from income tax. I don't buy this logic myself, but perhaps the candidate does. Or perhaps he is just trying to attract votes.

  18. illilillili

    > no mention of climate change or the environment in any way

He mentioned it twice. Once fairly explicitly when he said "cancel electric cars", and once implicitly when he said "make america the largest energy producer". The latter is code for "drill baby drill".

  19. FrankM

No one should take any of this with an ounce of seriousness. He had four years and did none of these things. It's just red meat for the rubes.

  20. Jim B 55

2 is directly contradictory to 3 and 5, and 6 is just absurd, as many workers don't pay much Federal Tax (ask Mitt).

  21. DudePlayingDudeDisguisedAsAnotherDude

    (9) seems to be incompatible with (18), where the government will force students to be patriotic. But does anyone care about this claptrap?

  22. Aleks311

As far as IVF goes down here in Florida Rick Scott is running for reelection and his ads have him specifically saying he's in favor of IVF (and his daughter is or has been pregnant via IVF)

  23. Scott Martin

I kind of count this as progress. In 2020, the Republican platform was "We like Donald Trump," so with this year's platform they've taken at least a pro forma step away from full-on cult of personality.

I continue to be surprised by Kevin's regressive stance on gender identity theory. Do I take from the "sigh" that he is okay with allowing males to compete in sporting events previously reserved for females?

    1. DButch

Did you ever hear about the fact that there are more genes than XX vs XY? And that doesn't come NEAR to diving into the messy world of gene expressions:

All steps in the gene expression process may be modulated (regulated), including the transcription, RNA splicing, translation, and post-translational modification of a protein. Regulation of gene expression gives control over the timing, location, and amount of a given gene product (protein or ncRNA) present in a cell and can have a profound effect on the cellular structure and function. Regulation of gene expression is the basis for cellular differentiation, development, morphogenesis and the versatility and adaptability of any organism. Gene regulation may therefore serve as a substrate for evolutionary change.

Now here's the thing - this is NOT in any way a standard one size fits all creation process - results are variable not precisely predictable, and can sometimes be fatal.

Even just with X and Y there is Trisomy (XXX, XXY, XYY), Tetrasomies (XXYY, XXXY, XXXX), and Pentasomies (XXXXY, XXXXX).

So, what are we discussing about boys and girls and how binary and perfectly defined the relationship is? 'Cause it isn't.

      1. JohnReed

According to gender identity theory, gender identity exists independently of sex or chromosomes or biology. That’s how we end up with the concept of “trans.” When gender identity doesn’t align with sex. For a misalignment to be possible, the two variables must be independent.

As for your description of sex development, I agree completely. There is huge variation in how humans arrive at either male or female. But there is no third (or fourth, or fifth… ) sex. We are all one or the other.
