Earthquakes and eclipses

America's greatest member of Congress speaks:

Oh come on, Marjie. A 4.8 earthquake? When God wants to send us a sign he'll at least hit 7 on the Richter scale. Take it from a Californian.

"God is sending America strong signs to tell us to repent . . . eclipses"

Well, just the _one_ eclipse, Marge. And, for those that knew how to look, I guess the "sign" sent by God on that one was sent decades and decades ago, because it's not exactly hard to predict exactly when eclipses will happen. Now, if the eclipse didn't happen when we all expected it to, that might be a "sign" from God.

Frankly, if a total solar eclipse is any "sign" from a higher power, I'd think that it was one of how stupendously wonderful our planet is, as the odds of having a moon just the right size to provide totality on some eclipses and cool-as-hell annular ring-of-fire situations on others is pretty low. We should celebrate such rare and amazing events, not use them to vaguely cluck about politics we don't like.

With karst windows, sinkholes, and the constant flow of hurricanes, God is also signaling to at least one Floridian (or maybe the state's Republican Party) to GTFO.

Right. God sending us a 4.8-power warning would be like if He had sent 5 inches of rainfall to get the attention of Noah and the Israelites.

Now, if Marjorie wants to pontificate about warnings, she should consider Krakatoa. That was a helluva shot across our bow. But did anybody consider it a warning, I wonder? Certainly not Marjorie, who probably couldn’t identify it if it came up in a conversation.

This! As observed elsewhere, God is REALLY gonna get her knickers in a twist if we don't GET THE DAMN MESSAGE!

Our country will survive as soon as we kick the end-of-day omen readers out of public offices and elect people with hope for a better future.

  4. Yikes

Was that a gag? Or did a member of congress assume her target audience is so dumb that they could consider an eclipse as a sign from god?

Sadly, I bet its the latter.

4.8 on the East Coast where historical buildings weren't built with earthquakes in mind. Funny Coincidence but the epicenter is very close to Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, NJ

Maybe she's right that the quake is a message to repent, but the person the message is directed to is incorrigible.

Yes, we must repent and brush those sinful lying, coveting, conspiring, gluttonous Republicans from offices all across the country.

We’ e had these in the past and no one sneezed. Welcome to the world of social media buffoonery. I was at the local train station and felt nothing more then when a train rumbles by….Last one I recall back in ‘86 or so thought it was a subway train.

Remember the God sent an actual world-wide plague when Trump was president, and this current earthquake seems to have its epicenter suspiciously close to Trump's New Jersey golf course.

    Take it from a Californian.

Who has probably spent almost no appreciable time in an unreinforced masonry building. 4.x may not spell disaster for such a structure, but it isn’t epsilon.

Maybe she's referring to the 7.4 quake in Taiwan. If anything's gonna wake us Americans up, it's got to be a quake in Asia.

The entire crowd of Christian prognosticators who appear fixated on Revelations & "the Rapture" that makes them claim support for Israel while they demonize Jews like Soros remind me of Wilder's The Bridge of San Luis Rey," one book I regret having read. Such messages aren't "otherworldly;" they're simply false attribution to an angry or uncaring deity.

The fact that so many who seem to ignore the commandments while obeying G-d's will by leaving environmental issues to fate rather than working to improve the outcome simply defies the rational teachings b of some traditional churches, which teach that good stewardship of the land is a human responsibility..I am not a church member, but do recall that my family's hymnal had a hymn with that theme.

Greene is such a publicity "hound" that less attention might not repress her free speech or newsworthy Congressional activity, but would be a public benefit. And I refuse to use all 3 names of anyone unnecessarily.

But I almost wish that eclipses weren't predictable, & that an unannounced one would put the fear of something in the ignorant woman. The fact that one person who is not actual leader, but who has so much negative clout to uprnd thr House, can distract that entire body from its responsibilities is absurd.

Also, a plague of locusts is coming this summer...well, cicadas, actually, but close...well, not really close, but...umm

A sunny day is in the forecast for my view of like 98% of totality. The next message from God where I live will come in 2099. I'll be long gone.

A sunny Monday afternoon is a wonderful gift from these imaginary gods. So would be a 9.0 earthquake which destroys the entire so called "Holy Land".

    Terra tremuit et quievit,
    Dum exsurgeret in Judicio Deus.

The earth trembled and became still again,
    When God arose in judgment.

My gut tells me that MTG is smarter than people realize.

Think about Ted Cruz. Every time he talks in public he sounds like an idiot. But we know he isn't an idiot: Harvard Law, Solicitor General's Office, argued cases before the Supreme Court. The man has serious brainpower. So why does he always talk like a fool? My guess is, he believes that is the best way to connect to R audiences.

MTG might be in that category. She's a performance actor who knows exactly what she is doing.

    1. jeffreycmcmahon

Counterpoint, none of those things Cruz has done are actually very difficult if you're a devoted career-building sociopath.

God really needs to take an introductory argumentation class to learn how to make the meaning of Their signs less opaque.

Amen, brother duncanmark. Is not the very presence of la chingada anaranjada proof of the end times?
