Welcome!

Welcome to my new blog. After four years at the Washington Monthly and 12 years at Mother Jones, I've decided to go full circle and return to blogging at my own site. This gives me a little more freedom to post when I want and a little more freedom to say what I want without worrying about how it might reflect on others.

Aside from that, things will be pretty much the same as always. I mostly blog about policy—I call it "policy lite"—but also about anything else that catches my eye. As always, there are lots of charts and, every Friday, plenty of cats. So settle in and enjoy.

[OMG. I can't believe my old avatar came up.]

I didn't word my question exactly right. I've been curious as to why some people have a hyperinflammatory response to this and I vaguely recall having read something in the Wsshington Post about scientists studying blood types in relation to this and blood type "A" being the most prevalent.

Don’t want to be constantly claiming the mantle of a long term reader, bu I remember (don’t know how though) coming across Washington monthly and going back to review some of the Calpundit posts. Took me some time to adapt to MJ, but had started to love it.

I’m in two minds as far as this transition is concerned. Perhaps it is related to the incident at the start of the Biden campaign, perhaps not. I’d take Kevin at face value about why he started this blog.

Just took a peek at Wikipedia entry and found this - which I didn’t know till today:

      Quote
      The Iraq war
Drum supported the 2003 Iraq War in its early stages, but just before the United States launched its attack, he changed his mind. He said, "Before the war started I switched to opposition on practical grounds (i.e., that George W. Bush's approach was incapable of accomplishing the goals it was meant to accomplish). Since then, I've pretty much come to the conclusion that, in fact, I should have opposed it all along on philosophical grounds: namely that it was a fundamentally flawed concept and had no chance of working even if it had been competently executed."
      End quote

      Hoocoodanode indeed.
      Best wishes Kevin

I'll miss seeing your stuff in Apple News where I usually read it but if this gives you a bit more freedom to write what you want when you want then I am all for it.

This is looking pretty good, but I have a few questions:

Will there be a way to order comments or will it always be first to last?
What will you be doing about trolls and spam?
Will there be a way to upvote comments?

I was reading Kevin since the CalPundit days (before the Washington Monthly), and will be here going forward. (I realize this is an inane comment; I'm just testing the comments function.)

Following you here from Political Animal and MJ. You're one of my daily reads and I plan to keep it that way. Wishing you good health and many posts.

Another old timer who has followed you since well before Mother Jones and welcomes the opportunity to continue to do so. Good luck and good health.

Congratulations on the new endeavor, Kevin. Lots of great content here already. And I'm happy to report certain governments aren't blocking you, so no VPN required.

    Best of Luck.

So glad you will still be blogging, I have enjoyed reading your posts for many years!

I hope there will be lunchtime photos most days.

Glad to make the switch. I do remember the Calpundit days but I do not think I knew of Kevin's name until Washington Monthly. Looking forward to more of his writing/musings.

    Dear Kevin,

Has it really been 16 years? Reading you has been a great pleasure. Stay well. The internet would be far worse without you.

    Best regards,

    Grenville

I've been following your blogs for years, Kevin, and I'll continue to follow you in your new home. I wish you the best of health and many more years of sharing your thoughts with the rest of us.

Hey, Kevin, I’m glad you’re getting set up in your new home. I’ve been following you since early Calpundit days. You’re one of my must reads of the day; you have literally kept me sane all these years. Keep on keeping on!

I just remembered that I have been following you since back before the Washington Monthly days. Back when Blogs were king.

Glad you aren't stopping. Take care of yourself first, though.

A comment about your header information:

I feel that in your explanation of Hopper's name, you have greatly undersold Grace Hopper:

"And this one is Hopper, named after Grace Hopper, a famous American naval computer scientist."

That's sort of like identifying Leonardo as "a famous artist" or perhaps Isaac Newton as "a famous mathematician." Grace Hopper was quite likely one of the most brilliant people of the 20th century. Anybody who doesn't know about her ought to read the Wikipedia article about her. I had the great pleasure of listening spellbound to one of her lectures, followed by being presented with one of her nanoseconds.
