AI is still not here. But it’s getting damn close.

I don't subscribe to Bloomberg so I can't read all of Tyler Cowen's column this week about artificial intelligence. But here's an excerpt from his blog. The topic is ChatGPT, an example of a Large Language Model:

I’ve started dividing the people I know into three camps: those who are not yet aware of LLMs; those who complain about their current LLMs; and those who have some inkling of the startling future before us. The intriguing thing about LLMs is that they do not follow smooth, continuous rules of development. Rather they are like a larva due to sprout into a butterfly.

I don't agree with Tyler about everything, but I sure do about this. And I suspect there are going to be some more converts when v4.0 of ChatGPT is released.

I always get lots of pushback when I write about how AI is on a swift upward path. The most sophisticated criticism focuses on the underlying technology: Moore's Law is dead. Deep learning has scalability issues.  Machine learning in general has fundamental limits. LLMs merely mimic human speech using correlations and pattern matching. Etc.

But who cares? Even if I stipulate that all of this is true, it just means that AI researchers are inventing new kinds of models constantly when the older ones hit a wall. How else did you suppose that advances in AI would happen?

In the case of ChatGPT I reject the criticisms anyway. It's not yet as good as college-level speech and perception, but neither was the Model T as good as a Corvette. It's going to get better very quickly. And the criticism that it "mimics" human speech without true understanding is laughable. That's what most humans do too. And in any case, who cares if it has "true" understanding or consciousness? If it starts cranking out sonnets better than Shakespeare's or designing better moon rockets than NASA, then it's as useful as a human being regardless of what's going on inside. Consciousness is overrated anyway.

The really interesting thing about LLMs is what they say about which jobs are going to be on the AI chopping block first. Most people have generally thought that AI would take low-level jobs first, and then, as it got smarter, would start taking away higher-income jobs.

But that may not be the case. One of the hardest things for AI to do, for example, is to interact with the real world and move around in it. This means that AI is more likely to become a great lawyer than a great police officer, for example. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if it takes only a few years for AI to put lawyers almost entirely out of business unless they're among the 10% (or so) of courtroom lawyers. And even that 10% will go away shortly afterward since their interaction with the real world is fairly constrained and formalized.

Driverless cars, in contrast, are hard because the controlling software has to deal with a vast and complicated slice of the real world. And even so they're making good progress if you can rein in your contempt for their (obvious and expected) limitations at this point in their development. AI will have similar difficulties with ditch digging, short order cooking, plumbing, primary education, etc.

It will have much less difficulty with jobs that require a lot of knowledge but allow it to interact mostly with the digital world. This includes law, diagnostic medicine, university teaching, writing of all kinds, and so forth.

The bottom line, whether you personally choose to believe it or not, is that AI remains on an exponential growth path—and that's true of both hardware and software. In ten or fifteen years its capabilities will be nearly a thousand times greater than they are today. Considering where we are now, that should either scare the hell out of you or strike you with awe at how human existence is about to change.

    Krugman actually predicted that back in the 1990s, with his "White Collars Turn Blue" essay. The blue collar jobs remain (or really any job that requires complex and unpredictable movement in a non-standardized physical environment), but much of the white collar jobs got automated away.

    He also had a bit about copyright and IP becoming nearly impossible to enforce, but that seems unlikely to me.

    That said, white collar workers are very well-connected politically and easy to mobilize, so I would not expect them to take automation sitting down. There will probably be a lot of efforts to hamstring with lawsuits and regulation, especially over copyright. The partners at law firms will probably fine - not so much the would-be younger attorneys.

      Most white collar jobs also have a pretty significant non-digital component. I expect this is large enough to keep most white collar professionals in their jobs for about ten to twenty years. The interface between the digital and offline portions of the job are just too great for organizations to adapt on a shorter time scale.

      But eventually those offline components will either reduce or organizations will learn to specialize between the computer doing the digital portion and the human linking the digital to the physical portion. That's when the real job losses will start. The time frame will just be less about capabilities then about organizations learning to divide tasks in ways that utilize the technology efficiently instead of trying to get the technology to do exactly what the human it is meant to replace currently does.

      I have been through some role outs of erp systems at my own jobs and it has been obvious that getting decision makers to realize how to get information they need out of a slightly different format in a new ERP system is actually a huge lift. If they can't even manage this kind of change I am super skeptical that many organizations will be able to efficiently deploy AI even well after AI is capable of performing those functions. It will require a different way of conceptualizing how tasks need to be divided up and very few organizations are good at doing this.

      I don’t see copyright and IP becoming “impossible” to enforce. If apple can create software to recognize that a photo or video on my iPhone is almost a duplicate of an existing photo or video on my iPhone - something which happens every day today - then it shouldn’t be too hard for software to figure out that a copy of a copyrighted movie is the movie and demand payment or immediate deletion.

    Personally, I don't see the point in arguing what the future of AI will be since there is zero I can do about it. Instead, I will bumble along for now relying on RI (real intelligence). I have seen nothing yet that is made better by AI. Maybe it will come, but it isn't here yet. Might as well argue about next year's weather.

    You are gonna have to tell us what "AI" is and how we will know it when it is here. Your AI discussions for years have always lacked this key component--a definition of what we are talking about.

      Yeah. Kevin even admits that the only thing even approaching AI (ChatGPT) is just mimicry and not actual AI.

      I don't see how anything else is "damn close", or even in the pipeline to be damn close. It's still a pipe dream.

      I think a key point folks are missing... AI doesn't have to be a sentient "general intelligence" in order to profoundly disrupt human civilization for better or worse. "Dumb" tools capable of doing creative jobs better than humans is what we're facing imminently.

      Kevin is smart enough to know the difference between a linear model and a log one but he doesn't seem to be applying it here. You don't get 2xbetter with just twice as much data on things like this.

      Anyway, what the AI doomers say isn't that we will be able to solve certain problems with an English-lanugage calculator like Chat GPT, but that it's going to work a major discontinuity on human society. That means that it will not approach but as he says just happen like a phase change into a butterfly.

      I don't think so. Not while we still have limits on storage and cycles. Moore's law is dead, Internet bandwidth is not increasing exponentially anymore... so unless and until we have a quantum leap in the parts, the machine ain't going to leap anything.

      That's not to say that in 50 years things won't be very different, but that's tautological anyway. I wouldn't want to go back to 1973 even incrementally.

        I'm sorry, but this is just wrong.

        Why do you think Moore's law or bandwidth matter for LLMs? You just flatly state that they're limiting ML potential with no explanation or reasoning attached.

        As a matter of reality on the ground, they don't matter, at least now. We may get to a point where raw processing matters again, but we aren't there now, and there's clearly a lot of headroom in the ML world at our current capabilities.

        This is something I'm looking at closely, because I'm pretty sure it will put me out of work before I can retire - I'm an expensive technologist, right in the crosshairs.

        LLMs are following the classic disruption model - people are overestimating their capabilities in the short term, but underestimating where they'll be in the long term. I suspect the rate of societal change is going to be limited by modifying existing complex systems to incorporate ML than anything else.

    But it won't scale linearly. It's like chess. There are lookup tables for 7 pieces left, I think. Anyway, getting to 8 or 9 isn't just doubling your effort or cleaning up your code for version 2.0.

    I think it will continue to improve, but unless we see some massive leap in computing power, we're only going to asymptotically approaching perfect.

    Chat GPT is impressive, no doubt, but I wouldn't expect it to get 2x better in just 2x the size.

    About those sonnets, the reason, imo, that they resonate with humanity is not just their beauty but their relatability. Shakespeare was giving voice to others' deepest yearnings and pain on the page. Not because he was following examples but because he experienced those feelings. Now peut-être somebody will fall in love with an AI and then break its little heart, but until then...

      Well, while I tend to be more of a skeptic on this front than certainly Kevin, it's not comforting to retort that no AI will ever replicate the sonnets of Shakespeare, because I certainly can't do that either.

      If the limit on an AI's abilities is that it won't be able to achieve the contributions of a once-in-four-centuries-genre-defining talent, that still leaves plenty of room for it to overtake the rest of us schlubs.

        Ah but you can fall in love, and have your heart broken, and weep when a forest burns, a father dies, an eagle flies. And that was my point. I hold no reservations that AI will eventually obtain some sort of emotional, creative level (how could it not if there is striving to grow), but until then it's just a really complex box with reams of data stuffed inside it. Maybe in the future...

          I think people are fixated on consciousness. Maybe human will create conscious machines, or maybe not (or maybe the machines created by humans will in turn create conscious machines).

          And maybe consciousness itself is just an illusion, an emergent quality of biology.

          But none of this is all that relevant to the question of: can AI put us all out of work? Our machines could be as dumb as rocks in terms of their ability to experience guilt or anger or infatuation or sorrow. And still be able to perform all tasks better (maybe on average a lot better) than the clever apes who created them—at least given enough time.

          Also, it seems plainly the case that, if we're being honest, humans are likewise simply "complex boxes with reams of data stuffed inside" — but the boxes happen to be made of organic compounds instead of silicon. I mean, both the materials we make machines from and the materials nature made us from result from the laws of the universe. There's nothing inherently special or better about the latter.

          Relatively common errors, which is no doubt why cgpt repeats them-- the language as it has been performed, not necessarily as it should be. CGPT does better poetry than I can, but on this evidence I do better grammar.

      Human experience is and will continue to be the province of humans. Machines can observe, analyze, replicate, according to how they're programmed, but experience is an alien concept to the machine.

      I don't expect AI will be in the sonnet-making business anytime soon. There's not a big market for even sonnet-making humans right now. But our art & culture today use technology that was undreamt of in Shakespeare's time, and the best includes works of genius that has resonated with humankind for generations. But it's not the machines that we credit for their works. It's the artist using new tools that is the creative spark. I suspect the same will hold in the future, however AI unfolds.

      That said, advances in technology don't always translate into advances in art. Movies and music today are vastly superior in technical detail to works from the past. But are they better art? For the most part, no. It is hard to be objective about it, but my two cents is that our obsession with technology has taken over our capacity to experience the world and translate that into art that resonates with other humans.

      Art is how we see and know ourselves. Will we make art to explore our humanity, or to commodify the human experience in serving some societal purpose?

      AI will be a new tool for making art. But for what is a choice that remains ours.

        I like this. And understand, I'm not hostile to the advent of AI. AI will have to evolve I think, by itself somehow - possibly it takes charge of its own growth after some time - to make those steps that we see as unique in us. I think it will get there eventually. And because in a very real sense it will be a "new species," it will create alien art, culture, thought. We might not even stomach it any more than we could understand it. I think that is the dark corner where popular culture and critics of AI find their fears. It's also probably where some of the most original works of humanity spring from, earning embrace or frothing rage.

      Going straight to Shakespeare is overshooting the mark. My take on ChatGPT and its likely successors is that it can competently produce mediocre prose. There are many use cases where that is good enough. If your job is to produce consistently mediocre writing, you should be worried. The next question is if it will ever produce good writing? I am skeptical. The whole idea is to through massive amounts of text into the hopper and have the AI spit something out. The vast majority of text is mediocre, so what should we expect. What about restricting the data to good writing, however defined? I am still skeptical. For one thing, this will give the "good writing" AI only a tiny fraction of data compare to its "good enough writing" cousin. For another, good writing is idiosyncratic. William Shakespeare's writing is not like Jane Austens, which is not like Henry James's, which is not like Mark Twain's, and so on. Through those texts into the hopper and just imagine what bastard child will come out the other end.

    I think it is worth pointing out that just because hardware (e.g. CPUs) improve 10x and software (ChatGPT) improve 10x, does not mean that the user experience or output improves 100x. I think that AI is going to do things that are currently unimaginable, but I'm not as confident in the economic disruption that Tyler and Kevin are predicting. There is a difference between the growth technological capabilities and the impact that growth has on the real economy. Given time, some people will adapt and develop skills that AI hasn't mastered yet. Also, if there is any group of people with the legal and bureaucratic means to stifle innovation, it is lawyers.

      There is a chance it works like some kind of chaotic system emerging like a phase change—the "butterfly" he talks about—but I'm with you.

      Much more likely is we asymptotically approach certain limits, some of which are now known and many of which aren't, but still exist. As long as that curve allows us time to adapt, it's fine.

      Counterpoint: a human is just a mildly tweaked chimpanzee, and yet humanity is far, far more transformative to the world around it than chimpdom has proved. I can't think of a fundamental reason why potential and relatively small future improvements in a machine that apes (hehe) human use of language might not be similarly significant.

    One of my sons started out in the construction industry almost 40 years ago. He's pretty smart, and he has a degree in economics, so when he started down this career path I asked him wouldn't he rather do something closer to his educational background. His reply was prescient:

    "Well, I like using my brain and solving problems, but what gives me the most satisfaction is managing people doing productive work and solving problems in the physical world--building things and improving things.

    "Someday," he went on, "probably in my lifetime, computers will be able to design buildings and spit out specifications and drawings. But I doubt if we will see computers in my lifetime that can recognize the problems, not to mention mistakes, and manage people to correct them, when the projects are well underway."

    Now he owns a successful company. His company doesn't build new buildings. Rather, it does asbestos abatement and mold remediation, and it does selective demolition for projects (some, very large) that are doing major renovations. He helps to fix things that need to be fixed to be saved, or that need to be improved to last another generation. And he provides a lot of good jobs for people who don't have advanced education, but don't mind working hard. And the workers he employs are not in danger of being displaced by silicon chips.

    He gets a lot of satisfaction from that, and some good money, too. And no, he doesn't worry about AI figuring out how to replace him.

      Except people are already doing this?

      People have deployed giant 3D printers to make houses and other buildings. It's crude and there are still some people in the loop, but it's happening already and only subject to more refinement.

        The issue is it's still expensive and difficult to do for things like office buildings. It'll be some time before you 3D print a skyscraper rather than just parts to assemble.

    I would be very surprised. For one thing, lawyers won't allow this to happen. And for another thing, if you have some kind of souped up Chat GPT as your lawyer, where is the liability when things go wrong? Will AIs actually make arguments that will convince human judges or juries for that matter? Will there be any empathy or room for compromise in an AI lawyer world? Where will judges come from if there are no lawyers? How will AI prosecutors decide which cases to take? Or plaintiffs' attorneys? This is starting to sound like an episode of Futurama.

    The thing is, if there is no actual understanding behind the incredible monkey show that is Chat GPT or its equivalent, then you will never be able to completely get rid of the weird loo loos that sneak into the AI generated text. If the AI does not understand what it is saying then it won't know the loo loos from the solid arguments and good conversations. I think we will find that getting to the Chat GPT level of so-called AI development is going to demonstrate the 99/1 rule the same way self driving cars have. Making 99% of the product takes 1% of the time. Making the remaining (and fundamental) 1% will take 99% of the time and effort.

      IAAL. They might be able to replace law clerks, but despite how our legal education system is geared, as you point out, there's an awful lot of stuff in there that probably will take a sci-fi style AI to mimic.

      I wouldn't mind it if Westlaw could write me research memos though. Github even has something like this for code that's not that far off already.

      Lawyers might not have any choice to allow it because it would probably be senior partners who want it the most.

    I honestly just don't get why you continue to read and post about cowen. This is at best a trite observation and really (IMO) a wrong and kinda stupid one. Where is the insightful or at least unique value in his commentary that makes you find him worth talking about once a week?

      Thanx, LeisureGuy, for finding that and posting the link.

      It's a well written column. No amazing revelations, and a couple of analogies I found non-informative (e.g., what the heck does the metamorphosis of a live organism have to do with software development, which is evolutionary on a continuum?) but organized, literate, and easy to read.

      So tell us, Dr. Cowen, did you write it or did you hire ChatGPT to do it for you?

        I asked ChatGPT to evaluate a recent book (2022, yeah I know) by a well known economic historian and blogger, and it began by attributing it to Cowen, NOT known as an economic historian.

        Oopsy.

    Most jobs like lawyer have too large an offline component for them to be displaced soon, also they often have to deal with information from many sources and formats and I am skeptical that AI is close to dealing with this.

    But jobs that deal with internally produced data might quickly be under threat. I think first to go will be things like call centers, AP, AR, purchasers,etc. People who mostly deal with internal systems and interact with people outside the organization in a fairly limited context. These kinds of positions could easily use an AI that could be optimized for an internal data set and for a limited range of outside interactions. This seems more likely to me than something like a lawyer who might have to deal with a very wide variety of documents, not all of them digital, in a discovery process.

    ChatGPT: Nice try, but I ain't falling for no banana in my tailpipe.

    That might be the point where I'd agree with you. Until then, AI is mostly just a tool, unable to form an independent thought or creatively think independently of its algorithms.

    While I agree that the people working on this are making remarkable progress in a short amount of time, I don't think what we're seeing can be extrapolated to general artificial intelligence. While LLM AI (and other variants on the near horizon) and human-style intelligence are related in that they are both examples of emergent behavior that arise out of "sufficiently complex" systems, they are nevertheless not the same thing, and the reason they're not the same thing is that they way that they learn is completely different.

    The result of this is that we're in the middle of a cognitive uncanny valley, where an LLM AI will do things that make sense most of the time, but will do something utterly contrary to what a human would do in a small percentage of cases. As far as I am aware, current research is all about closing the gap and reducing the fraction of scenarios where the AI takes the unfathomable path, but no one is working on eliminating that path, because no one knows how. AIs will continue to make what seem like boneheaded decisions, even if at extremely low rates.

      Steve, I think you've identified a serious challenge--how to eliminate the bonehead plays.

      I play bridge competitively. Not at a national or world championship level, but I'm a reasonably competent player. My downfall is my occasional bonehead plays. At the level of the greatest champions, there are fewer bonehead plays, but they still happen. Bob Hamman, who is recognized as one of the greatest ever, said this about what makes a good player: "We're all bad. It's just that some of us are less bad than the rest."

      If we can have software that is less bad than the rest, that will be a success. (But I'm still not sure I want it driving a bus on the highway.)

      That does not differentiate it from humans. If to be intelliegnt you have to completely free of bonehead decisions, then there is nobody who is intelligent.

        There are different categories of boneheaded decisions: ones that a human might make, and ones that a human would never make. Example: AIs that recognize birds were trained on thousands of hummingbird photos. A substantial fraction of hummingbird photos include hummingbird feeders as well. Some of those AIs would then recognize a photo of a hummingbird feeder as a hummingbird, even if there were no actual hummingbird in the photo at all.

        That is the kind of boneheaded decision that an AI can make, but that no human would ever make. Again, this is because humans learn in a way that is very different from the way that AIs learn.

    How is a LLM going to do that?

    As a former aerospace engineer, I know computers have made things vastly better. But LLMs are not rocket scientists. Nor are they drug researchers or CRISPR biologists. There is a big disconnect there.

    I'm not saying AI won't do those things. Just that LLMs have nothing to do with those areas.

    Lawyers will not go away until congress and state legislatures are no longer dominated by lawyers. Congress and state legs will protect their own, by requiring Real Live Human Beings be in court to file stuff. And those real live humans will be lawyers, collecting full fees the whole time. Literally the last job on earth still performed by humans might be “lawyer” because lawyers (and their promotions to “judge” and “congressperson”) control everything else.

    Not sure how those computer lawyers are going to be able to succeed if AI has given us 70% unemployment, the resulting societal chaos will make law pretty difficult to practice.

    "The first thing we do, let's kill all the lawyers". So, we won't have to literally kill all of them, but, based on what I've seen, AI machines will be able to write some pretty remarkable legal briefs in no time time at all. So watch out lawyers. And watch out medical profession. And watch out coders. And watch out call center workers, etc., etc., etc. Good. Maybe then we'll be able to concentrate on fixing and maintaining our houses, buildings, roads, bridges and sidewalks, turning our cities into livable paradises, and give everyone a chance to find their creative selves. For this we'll probably need to go back to a 90% marginal income tax rate, and a hefty UBI. Once, however, robots learn to make other robots without human assistance, I think it will be curtains for the human race. That's ok. At times (many times) I think we don't seem to be too much better than poo flinging chimpanzees.

      I can see ChatGPT doing a slightly better job than existing software in producing routine business documents, but I can't see it working a courtroom. Some friends of mines are litigators, and they make a lot of money doing jury consulting, running mock trials and analyzing mock juror comments. Bringing a case to trial involves operational psychology as much as legal capability, and applying the right form of pressure to encourage the other party to settle is a strategic component of this. I can't figure out what you could use to train ChatGPT on to get even a mediocre result.

      Speaking of mediocre, ChatGPT seems to excel in areas with a high tolerance for mediocrity. Writing stuff that sounds like Shakespeare's sonnets is a low bar. I'll give you "Shall I fly? Shall I die?" as an exercise for the reader. For the most part, legal documents have a a much lower tolerance for mediocrity. It is really easy to generate something that looks like a legal document, but it is much harder to ensure that the document means what one thinks it does. Even in contract law, this is a problem. A lawyer is paid to explore the possibilities for error or ambiguity and, ideally, eliminate them. If you don't mind a low quality document that is unlikely to be subject to litigation, something like ChatGPT or, better yet, NoLo Press, would be adequate. If you want to get it right, you want to get the best lawyer you can afford and will handle your business.

      I don't think it's about imitation as much as about emulation. Imitation is useful, but it is much more useful to have a model of others' behavior.

    Teachers are already using ChatGPT to write lesson plans, unit plans and activities for their students. Whatever AI can do, it will still need input to get it done. So the intersection of the knowledge industry and real world applications (like classrooms, for instance) will still require people with real intelligence, experience and judgement.

    I can whistle past the graveyard like this for now. We'll see how long that lasts.

    Humans will recognize their boneheaded decisions and correct them, often in real time or close to it.

    Is there an AI that's able to recognize it's own wrong decisions and adapt accordingly, and if there were would we call that regret?

    I don't mean just to correct for the next circumstance but the added knowledge of the error in context.

    What will happen when you have entirely automated corporations, protected by corporate personhood? And then when most corporations are AI?

    What will happen when some of these corporations are designed to be corrupt and to facilitate corruption? Will the broader system of AIs purge them or accommodate them?

    If making money is the goal of autonomous AI corporations, will it still be their goal after they think about it? When robotics becomes sufficient they won't have to rely on humans to do anything, so how do we assure they will care for us and not view us as an infestation, or something to be just ignored?

    On the other hand, they won't need to hoard that much money so a universal basic income is probably inevitable, at least until the computers forget about it.

    Right now if you ask ChatGPT what is 3 to the power 73, it will answer "approximately 14,091,714,236". Which is way wrong. The actual answer is 6.758519... x 10 to the 34th power. As a large language model, it can mimic language extremely well but can't calculate worth a darn. But imagine a ChatGPT that could call domain specific APIs before delivering the answer. In this case it could call a calculator and get the right answer. For research it could call Lexus/Nexus. For law it could call Westlaw or Casetext. Once ChatGPT can call other resources via API, it could take quite a leap.

      you CAN however ask it to use python to do calculations. It's admittedly not what we might want from a general-purpose chat-based agent, but you can do this, and I'm sure that by next year someone will have an agent that can actually do calculations or fetch data for you regardless of how you ask. AdeptAI's ACT-1 can already find stuff on e.g. craigslist or zillow for you.

    If that were true, we'd already have self driving cars, which have not made any significant progress in several years. They still can't drive safely anywhere except the desert since they can't cope with weather worse than partly sunny. Nor can they safely negotiate an unprotected left turn (i.e. one without a stop sign or turn arrow).

    The fact is that no new technology of any import has been invented since back propagation in 1986. Everything since then has been technology enabling an increase in the number of artificial neurons and an increase in the size of training sets.

    Machine learning is little more than a type of memory. If you think all problems can be solved just by remembering the previous solution, you should go all in on Tesla's full self driving. They can't.

    ChatGPT in particular remembers which words and phrases are often used together. If you think that cogent text can be produced in a total absence of knowledge of the subject matter, you're nuts.

    Many years ago, there was a program called Racter that got a glowing writeup in Scientific American. By an enhanced fill in the blanks technique using tagged words, it was able to produce some astonishing conversational English. I tried my hand at writing it and indeed it produced some astonishing text. But that text was buried inside a deep pile of complete irrelevance, nonsense and bullshit.

    The authors of the book on Racter had actually had basically the same experience. But they produced a gigantic pile of output and filtered it to select out only the things that were surprisingly good. They also didn't tell anybody that is what they did. The only intelligence was in the human filters, not the software.

    From what I can gather, especially from Ian Bogost, ChatGPT is suffering a similar problem. The good text you see, and some of it is surprisingly good, is deliberately selected from a larger space of responses that are often not so good. That is about what you would expect from a language pattern matcher, and again the intelligence is in the people who recognize and pull out the surprising from the foolish.

    At the end of the day, ChatGPT is just a language Vitamix, and I'm not going to follow Kevin's enthusiasm on the subject until I see it consistently producing quality text and until I see it produce a genuinely new thought.

    But I'm not holding my breath. AI has been just ten years away since the late 1950's. The field has become expert at moving the goal posts. Or rather, the kibitzers on the field are. Actual experts are a lot less optimistic on a rapid timeline.

    It is indeed surprising how many things people thing are hard actually can be done with little more than memory and pattern matching. But the failure of self driving cars to get past their wall is an indicator that perhaps not everything is.

    People see computers play chess and such and, since that is hard for us to do, think that computer genius is right around the corner. But things like chess involve searching a very large database to find the best answer, something that people suck at, and that grandmasters bypass through developing a large array of heuristics.

    People are astonishingly good at driving cars. We can do it in all weather, under all traffic conditions, with a remarkably low accident rate. For every 1000 miles you drive, your chances of getting into a car accident are 1 in 366. The average driver will file an insurance claim for an auto collision once every 17.9 years. This means the average person experiences three to four auto collisions in their lifetime. Remember that when Elon Musk tells you how much safer his cars are.

    But it is precisely these tasks that seem easy to us that AI chokes on. That is simply because they do NOT involve simply searching a large database. This is always the point where AI hits a wall. With self driving cars, it is inclement weather and left turns. With Large Language Models, it is writing a theme on a book you have never read and have no knowledge of. Anyone who thinks that can happen reliably (not filtered from a stack of failures) is nuts. At the end of the day, there are problems that can only be addressed when something is actually thinking, and not just querying, in whatever form, large data sets.

    And I hasten to say once again: self driving cars are NOT making good progress. They solved all the low hanging fruit problems and now their development has been stalled out for some time.
