American runner wins Olympic medal today

Congratulations to Shannon Rowbury! She just won the 1500 meter bronze medal . . .

. . . in the 2012 Olympics.

She placed sixth in the actual race, but moved up to fourth when the top two finishers were disqualified for doping and then to third when yet another was DQed. But why did it take 12 years to figure this out?

    While we're at it...

Congratulations to Al Gore! Winner of the 2000 presidential election, after all the votes in Florida were counted. It didn't take 24 years to figure that out, but it's never too late to correct a mistake.

Let's go back to his inauguration on January 20, 2001, and rerun history. Please! I'm pretty sure we don't end up with wannabe dictator driving a stake through the heart of democracy in the new year.

Doping is sports is a never ending game of Whack-a-Mole. The testing agencies have developed much more accurate and sensitive testing methods today, and they are able to use these new methods to test preserved samples form years ago. That's why it took so long

So she didn’t get almost everything there was to be had by winning the medal. No standing on the podium. No pictures with her team proudly wearing the medal. No television interviews. No kids wanting her autograph. No job opportunities. No hometown hero stuff. Just a correction in the record book.

It's funny that Drum's framing for this story is less "why are sports corrupt" and more "why are you bothering me with this story now".
