Another Georgia defendant goes down

Just like yesterday, good news comes in pairs. Kenneth Chesebro has pleaded guilty to illegally conspiring to overturn Trump’s 2020 election loss in Georgia. He was the guy who came up with the fake electors scheme, and his plea deal requires him to face only a single felony charge instead of the original seven. He has also agreed to testify against everyone else.

So that's three down out of 19 in the Georgia case. Demanding an expedited trial really hasn't worked out well for folks. We'll see how the others do later in the year.

The flood gates are opening up as we speak. They will see the writing on the wall and take whatever deal they can get.

Early trial meant they got an early deep look into what Willis's people have by way of evidence and narrative. And these pleas mean there isn't going to be a public airing of that evidence so the other defendants don't get a preview into the cases against them. More pleas a-comin' down the track, I'd bet.

This one strikes me as pretty important for the case in DC too. That's where the fake-electors ploy was schemed out and coordinated from, and Cheseboro was very deep in that. Powell was part of it and involved in some key meetings there but iirc was charged in GA mainly around the voting machine thievery.

good news i suppose, presuming their testimony is useful in prosecuting trump, but it really pisses me off he and powell are both getting just probation and minor fines. they tried to overthrow the damn government and are facing zero real punishment.

Chese & Kraken! Two of the highest level co-conspirators have turned! I wonder how much food is on the walls at MAL now.

Putting up a brave face, Trump said:

"“Massive information and 100% evidence will be made available during the Corrupt Trials started by our Political Opponent,” he wrote on Truth Social. “We will never let 2020 happen again. Look at the result, OUR COUNTRY IS BEING DESTROYED. MAGA!!!”

Looking forward to the presentation of "100% evidence" he promises. But if it is such a slam dunk, why does he continue trying to delay the trials?

Jack Smith, of course, is getting some freebies here.

Now we get to find out if Rudy is still mentally fit enough to keep himself from dying in jail instead of his weird kid's basement.

Even as the world's trouble spots increase & the planet keeps on warming, I'm not unhappy to see that Fani Willis was probably underestimated by both trump, his fellow disrespecters of tthe Constitution, & any remaining attorneys willing to represent them.

Hope that it's also adding to Jordan's aggravation as he laughably continues to seek the speakership. Since he doesn't respect government & hasn't really contributed to it in 16 years other than snark UK ng & interrupting others, I hope that he loses bigly , more each day, & resigns from Congress altogether. That's surely not too much to ask, following his pressure campaign that in inspired art least one death-threat call.

I don't think it's clear that “demanding an expedited trial really hasn't worked out well.” Kenneth Chesebro avoided jail time (though he does have to put in 100 hours of community service). If Fani Willis has a solid case (which I expect she does, though we won't know for sure until there's a trial), that's a good deal for Chesebro. This is a complicated case which will take a long time to present, and it seems likely that Willis wasn't particularly eager to hold a trial just for Chesebro. So he might have gotten a better deal than he would have if he hadn't asked for an expedited trial.

I sympathize with your (and kahner's) general point, but on the other hand pleading to a felony I think makes him ineligible to practice at least until it's expunged, which could happen if he follows through on all his conditions and is a very good boy who does fine, etc.

Beyond that he's 62, as I recall, so he won't have much chance to re-establish any kind of legal presence if it is eventually expunged. He's probably headed for a tell-all autobiography and a couple of contrition tours after he's done with the testifying phase of his life. Powell has already made her name a byword and a hissing, one that for a generation people won't see without laughing. It's not enough real punishment, but it's something.

I dunno. The ones who flip first always get the best deal and these two did. Everyone who waits until later has a steeper hill to climb. By the time it penetrates Giuliani's alcohol sodden brain, it won't be a question of time or probation. It will be a question of how much time.

Depends whether or not he has excellent trade goods which can fascinate Fani Willis enough to save him. Something, perhaps, like Giuli wore a wire when he met with Trump to make CERTAIN that The Boss looks out for his Boy.
