Republicans are split in half these days. On one side you have the MAGA crowd. They cheer Donald Trump for saying that no will dare give us trouble if he's president—and if they do he'll rain down hellfire like no one has ever seen before. But in real life they're effectively antiwar because Joe Biden is president and they're against anything he's for.
Then you have the more conventional Republicans, whose bloodthirstiness is seemingly unlimited. Biden has put together a remarkable international coalition that's been resolutely on Ukraine's side for two years, but they're vitriolic over the fact that he didn't deliver a thousand F-16s the day after Russia invaded. Biden has been all but adamantine in his support of Israel, but their ears start smoking if he so much as mentions that it's a shame so many people are dying. Houthi rebels are attacking shipping in the Red Sea and this is a huge black eye for the US, which should—
Well, something. It's never quite clear what.
I understand being on Israel's side. But as usual, Israel drives everyone nuts. I've read multiple times from conventional conservatives that—literally—Palestinians ought to be grateful that Netanyahu has gone so easy on them. It's just beyond belief. Their bloodlust is so all-consuming that they object to the mere idea of feeling any remorse over 20,000 civilian deaths and millions of displacements.
I'm 65 years old. None of this should surprise me. But it still does.
Wiser words have rarely been spoken. You might add this one to your quote rotation at the top of the blog.
I just got paid 7268 Dollars Working off my Laptop this month. And if you think that’s cool, My Divorced friend has twin toddlers and made 0ver $ 13892 her first m0nth. It feels so good making so much money when other people have to work for so zc02 much less.

Okay, this is another thing that makes me, for one, crazy. Is it impossible to ban spammers? Is that it? Are they the Clarence Thomases of the Internets?
If you recall, this comment section was littered with spam for a while and Kevin did a couple of things to get rid of them. Apparently it’s not an easy thing to do. For a while, whatever it was that he did worked but apparently the spammers found a work around. I suppose if it gets really bad again Kevin will take the time/energy to get rid of them again.
>>>vitriolic over the fact that he didn't deliver a thousand F-16s the day after Russia invaded
but they will all cheer when trump sends 1000 f-16's to putin
We had to burn the witches to save them--it was for their own good.
Conventional Republicans are angry because Biden didn't support Ukraine enough, but they'll knuckle under to MAGA Republicans who don't want to support Ukraine at all. Either they are too cowardly to oppose the pro-Putin wing of the party, or the anger was all a sham to begin with. It's hard to say which is worse.
Speaking of bloodlust, just saw this today:

Thoughts and prayers.
Really excellent. Thanks.

Perfect.
I’m about Kevin’s age. The Republican Party has supported at least 37 of our last 12 wars & military adventures.
Ukraine, in its second year, is a remarkable exception. For the first time in living memory Republicans have turned against a real-life shooting war. The reason is clear to anyone who wants to know.
Putin has Orban blocking European aid and the GOP blocking US aid. He may not only survive but win this thing after all.
What an absolute travesty for the West and for the world.
"For the first time in living memory Republicans have turned against a real-life shooting war. The reason is clear to anyone who wants to know. "
Authoritarians know each other when they one another, and they always side with their kind. None of them is comfortable living in a liberal democracy, and the sooner they have a strong leader who will punish the wicked, the better.
Democrats are at least united in their bloodlust no matter how nutty they are driven by their allies.
"Their bloodlust is so all-consuming that they object to the mere idea of feeling any remorse over 20,000 civilian deaths and millions of displacements."
I blame the parents. And the individuals who aren't trying to change themselves.
I had very violent parents, and while I'm intellectually a liberal, emotionally I want to see cities on fire. I'm trying really hard to suppress and paper over this unfortunate fact, though.
These days you can just press a button and burn down a city.
Their bloodlust is so all-consuming that they object to the mere idea of feeling any remorse over 20,000 civilian deaths and millions of displacements.
Most of it is pure politics, as usual.
Many Republicans sense—perhaps rightly (though hopefully we don't get to find out either way)—that any major "softening" of the administration's support for the Netanyahu regime will hurt Democrats next year. This, I personally think is abundantly clear, is partly why Biden has gone so easy on Bibi and his warmaking.
There's also the belief in evangelical circles that the founding of the State of Israel has ushered in the End Times (which we're apparently now living through). The implication is that anything less than 24/7, 110% white hot support for Israeli military incursions is tantamount to being allied with the enemies of Jesus. And yes, that doesn't say good things about how these whackjobs view the humanity of that region's Arabs and Muslims.
Anyway, as usual, Republicans in Washington will do whatever it takes to strengthen their political armor against primary challenges, and that means going as full on wingnut as possible in all things, foreign policy very much included. So the more Palestinian deaths, the better (terrible words to write, I realize, but I think it really does amount to just that when it comes to large swaths of America's GOP).
Is Mr. Drum crying himself to sleep every night over this? Of course not.
Ukraine is SQUARELY Biden's fault. He had to dragged kicking and screaming into more weapons, dithered and publicly lied about why he wasn't sending them, and has proved unable to ramp up American military to production to the level. Part of that last is not his fault. Clinton, Bush, Obama and Trump all presided over the hollowing out of our industrial capacity. Bur it's also things he could have done. For example NATO gear has to be repair in Poland, 600 miles from the front. There were no efforts to situate repair sites in Ukraine and use civilian contractors to teach the Ukrainians how to repair (and the contractors mean we don't have to attack Russia when Russia hits them).
The administration was never clear and specific about what this war would entail and its because they hadn't decided either.
Israel whatever. But Ukraine, I have been deep deep into Ukraine since January of 2022. Biden did a good job in the run up to the full invasion in 2022 but he was never comitted to Ukraine winning. Only not losing. And now Ukraine is in danger of losing.
