Border crossings drop to 102,000 in September

As usual, Camilo Montoya-Galvez of CBS News has an early release of the border crossing figures—though they're a little later than normal this month. In any case, he reports that there were 102,000 crossings in September:

Of this total, 54,000 were illegal crossings and 48,000 were asylum requests made at border stations.

Good gosh that's terrible. Way too many. What is that, monthly numbers? 8 million in the last 5 years? That's nuts.

Politically, even at this lower number, I think any discussion of border crossings hurts Harris. Further, as your chart shows, the flow seems to have responded to Biden's executive actions on the border: frankly, this supports the GOP argument.

Can you explain how Trumpians have any argument on border security? I remind you that they rejected a bipartisan bill that gave them what they were asking for on Trump’s orders.

iamr4man - I am not supporting anything from Trump. Rather, I am being a political realist. At this point, anytime the conversation is about immigration, I think Harris is losing.

Note, the same concept applies to Trump and reproductive rights.

As several people have noted--what gop argument? What the chart shows is that Whitaker in the 60 minutes interview cherry picked the data by noting the low that border crossings hit during the Pandemic. He didn't note that border crossings had already began to accelerate before Biden took office. Now border crossings are down below what they were when Biden took office even despite the unwillingness of Republicans to pass a border bill that one of their own had crafted. The bill had little in it (like a path to citizenship) that liberals wanted but at least it would have increased the # of border agents and immigration judges to decrease the backlog in asylum cases. Trump's argument on immigration isn't about creating a sane and humane system--it is solely about demonizing and dehumanizing immigrants. Is this the GOP argument you are referring to?

jbus and camusvsartre - I was referring to the GOP claim that Biden could do a lot, by executive order, to reduce border crossings. It seems, on this limited point, the GOP was right: immigration flows have responded to Biden's executive order.

          Lol, right.

Literally noone has ever argued that the President was completely powerless.

          How dumb.

But I realize this is just part of your schtick. Carry on.
