I don't get why people are so breathless about this. Have they forgotten that the US was posting similar daily death counts a few months ago? Yes, it's true that India's COVID deaths are undercounted. But it's also true that its population is quadruple that of the US.

According to Worldometers on January 20th the US posted 4,441 deaths. And Republican Governors were demanding “opening up” the economy.

Because Biden was being inaugurated -- albeit against the GQP gubernatorial wishes -- so any excess death would be blamed on the president.

Perfect storm for good GQP House & Senate results in 2022, if not a dual Biden & Harris impeachment.

It's just that the mahnitude of India's second wave comes as a shock after the successful containment of the first wave. Complacence, hubris and just bad planning had a lot to do with the lapse.

It's exactly the same. A bunch of religious and social holidays that led to mass gatherings, coupled with election season so a bunch of political rallies by pols who had downplayed masking and social distancing.

We need to be exporting more of our vaccines. The approval for children ages 12 and up will lead to a bump up in vaccinations, but we are making plenty to handle that.

Our PPE production needs to be revved up as well to send supplies out--even as donations. The new/expanded suppliers in the US should be vetted and given contracts to help deal with the surges happening across the world. This would help those companies show that they can ramp up, and help pay for that built out capacity. Then we have to work out a way to mothball excess capacity until needed the next time around.

CO dropped out of the red zone (25 new cases/day/100K), leaving MI by itself (though numbers still dropping fast in MI).
SD, NE, KS, LA, VA all jumped in the pool together (10 or less new cases/day/100K)

NH changed way it was counting first dose vs fully vaccinated, so 1st dose dropped from 60% to 57%, fully vaccinated jumped from 30 to 33% (from CovidActNow)
Twelve states and DC at 50% or greater (first shot), Five states below 35%. Why that 35% first shot has not been over run by now is a sin.
