Crime in Washington DC is down a lot since Trump left

Donald Trump today:

We will rebuild our capital city so it is no longer a nightmare of murder and crime.... Right now if you leave Florida — "Oh, let's go darling, let's go look at the Jefferson Memorial" ... and you end up getting shot, mugged, raped.

Uh huh. Washington DC has always been a high-crime city, but as usual, Trump is full of shit:

As of the first quarter of 2024, the violent crime rate in Washington DC is 18% lower than it was when Donald Trump left.

Since U.S. voters simply do not care about the future of our republic, and since the federal electoral infrastructure is skewed to Christian nationalists holding power, with state-level gerrymandering likely to remain in favor of the G.O.P. for decades, is it time to hop on the MAGA bandwagon?

The career opportunities are there. The consequences to doing crimes are basically nil from this point forward. The opportunities to sabotage the movement from within are abundant.

Sure, women will have to wait for their doomed pregnancies to become septic in order to abort, and health care and climate are going to get a lot worse, but people have repeatedly shown that they do not care. They don't care that Girl Scouts will have to leave the state to abort, or that cheerleaders will become mothers in high school.

A trans acquaintance said recently, "Why bother voting for Biden? We already know we can survive 4 more years of Trump."

Time to abandon morons like that to their fate and save ourselves?

When they are in a Trump “reeducation” camp I’m sure they will shake their fist in anger at Biden for putting them in their predicament by failing to “earn” their vote.

Although DC answers to Congress legislatively, POTUS directly commands the DC National Guard. He's laying the groundwork for posse comitatus.

Trump wants to overturn home role and setback efforts at DC statehood to stave off the Democratic takeover as long as he can. The only way the Fascist flavor of the GOP can win is by preventing non GOP Fascist groups from voting.

Most people just about everywhere think crime is skyrocketing. Trump takes advantage of this by claiming the statistics are phony. People can believe a bunch of numbers provided by the “deep state” or they can believe him and their own eyes. Once in office the statistics will magically become truth and proof of his greatness. This already worked with unemployment statistics, which prior to the 2016 election he claimed were actually 40% unemployed and immediately after his election became reliable.

Crime in DC is down because the DC Attorney General has begun to focus on the repeat offenders mostly teenagers who were getting boomeranged in and out of courts. The old AG plus covid reasons meant this group wasn't being incarcerated. The AG elected in the last cycle is charting those repeat offenders as adults and they are getting jail terms. The DC government also passed a crime bill that has done some other stuff too.

The result is far fewer carjackings. Frustratingly though shootings are still bad - DC is hamstrung from keeping guns out of the city due to their lack of statehood but at least MD and VA have enacted more regulations though not nearly enough in Virginia.

Looking at the 20+ year chart above, along with others that show similar paths for crime elsewhere in the US over similar periods.....it seems unlikely that the current, relatively minor, local efforts play much of a role in the reduction.

No in this instance they really do. Crime had been on a downward path in DC until the Trump admin and COVID. The event created a pattern where teenagers began to carjack cars for the purpose of joyriding, the cars would be found hours later abandoned in most cases.

Thanks. I lived there over on the left side of the chart when violent crime was twice what it is now and survived. OK, I did stay pretty much to the left of the park and around the mall.

Silly Kevin, you don't take Trump's words literally; you take them figuratively, because he speaks a Deeper Truth. And of course DC is just full of Those People, and we all know how they are. Also something something Welfare something Obamaphones something my Hard-Earned Tax Dollars™ something.

Consider the cosmically confused gay Republicans,

    . . . .
“It feels like the Soviet Union, Marxist environment now,” Dorman, 64, complained. “With the gay community, they feel that Republicans on the far-right have an anti-gay thing. Yes, they have a certain religious belief. They have a right to say they don’t like that lifestyle.”

“I’m almost anti-gay,” Dorman told The Post. “It’s an embarrassment to see this kind of behavior… I’d really invite them to go to Iran or Gaza. See what that does for you. See how fast they throw you in prison or kill you.”
    . . . .

This nearly complete incapacity is not limited to just gay conservatives and it's obviously a medical issue.

The openly anti-Trump Republicans, gay or not, are those who recognize that saying the quiet part out loud threatens to wreck their gimmick for generations.
