This is Hilbert rolling around on the backyard patio, only to be momentarily distracted by a dog walking by. Hilbert is oddly fascinated by dogs. Not afraid, precisely, and not sociable either, but always intrigued. What are these furry things that are almost like us? A strange breed of cat? Something else? What what what?

There's a typo here, Kevin. Instead of "A strange breed of cat? " It should read "A strange and patently inferior breed of cat?"
You're welcome.
For many cats, all the world’s a zoo, filled with the oddest creatures to observe, although some of the creatures can be useful sometimes for more than just mild entertainment.
Well isn't that the cat's meow....
My dogs feel the same way about cats, looking at each other in bewilderment as this bizarre creature arches its back and hisses at them just because they sociably tried to sniff its bum.
We have both dogs and a cat and they have intersting relationships.Obviously thev cat is not afraid of the dogs because he is clearly the superior animal (in his own mind). One dogs (the lab) basiscally innors the cat which occasionally annoys the cat but our malamutes plays with the cat all the time. They chase each other, the cat tries to seal the dog's food just to get a reaction and they play fight (at least the malamute is playing, the cat is vicious). They al grew up together which makes it easier.
CNN has a story about The First Cat:

Tough life.
We have had a series of Dobermans and cats over the years. At a previous house I heard cat squaling and looked out to see the neighbors tomcat strutting around our deck while our neutered cats clung to the side of the house. I let the Doberman out and he was very clear in communicating that those were his cats and no bullying was allowed.
More recently we had two cats who were raised together and got along well together. Our aged Doberman at the time died and suddenly they hated each other. All I can figure is that they both saw the alpha pet position open and both went for it.
