Friday Cat Blogging – 27 December 2024

This is a rare archival photo of Hilbert and Charlie hanging out together back when Charlie was still a kitten. Well, kittenish. They were so cute together.

For almost two decades I had a pair that would have the noisiest fights. Well, Monster the tiny girl (lived to 23 and never weighed more than 6.5 pounds) howled like a banshee, while Dirk was silent. Happened all the time, and you would think that the world was ending. Over the years, there was never the slightest indication of an injury, so I assume that wasn't the intent.

It wasn't quite play. Monster was in charge. Dirk was happy to be the bottom cat, but he insisted that Monster periodically enforce her dominance.

We had an older cat who was the alpha female. We brought home a kitten who immediately wanted to take over. There were cat chases around the house ending up with the older cat hissing and peeing on the furniture. They sorted it out after awhile and we got new upholstery so I guess it was a win-win

I have one of those tiny girls that yowels like a banshee at the slightest altercation. Love her to pieces, but she really does not play well with others.

Monster did all of the bullying in the house. Another cat was Eddie, who had major health problems for all of his nine years of life. He didn't have any concept of social hierarchy, and just assumed everyone was equal. Every so often, Monster decided that she needed to assert herself, and would come up to Eddie and glare at him and make him give up whatever spot he was occupying.

Eddie would just look back at her, very confused as to what was going on. She'd creep a little closer. Eventually, on the principle that crazy, violent people are best left alone, he'd get up and go somewhere else, but without any of the body language of submitting.

              It left Monster fuming.

In fact, the more I look at that picture, the look on Charlie’s face and Hilbert’s right paw, I’m not so sure it is the picture of peace and tranquility that Kevin makes it out to be. Maybe the calm before the storm
