Health Update

With a heavy heart, I have to tell you that after a long battle with cancer my husband Kevin Drum passed away on Friday, March 7, 2025.

No public memorial services are planned.

In lieu of flowers, please donate to the charity or political cause of your choice.

A Facebook page, 'In Memory of Kevin Drum', has been created as a place for friends and family to share memories of Kevin. I encourage you to post your thoughts and memories there.

Thank you to all the wonderful blog readers who supported, encouraged and challenged him through the years.

He will be greatly missed.

Marian

My condolences to Mary and the rest of Kevin's family.

What a terrible time to leave the earth for someone who cared as much about rational liberalism as anyone I've read. Damn!

    My deepest condolences.

I’ve been reading Kevin’s work since he was with Mother Jones. I’ve greatly appreciated his insights and wit. He will be greatly missed.

I have no FB and so I'm here.

Thanks for the cats, the dazzling pictures, the charts, and sticking to it.

I'm truly sad at his passing. He was a leader at a time when we have truly needed a leader, and his contributions were important and many.

My heartfelt condolences Marion. I cannot think of anyone else that I have not personally known that I have cried over their passing. I have been reading Kevin for over 20 years. He was a sane comfort in times of insanity. He touched many this way, and will be deeply missed.

    Farewell Kevin,

Should there be anything beyond the veil, I hope that it allows you to see how things turned out. Curiosity and a need to understand were who you were and I can't imagine a heaven that would deny you that. We others will sail onward, but always missing you.

I am agnostic and so I believe the cosmic odds are against it, but I hope we meet again.

Same for me. I've never met KD but his writing has influenced me greatly.

Just devastated and will miss him.

An excellent tribute and wish for him to somehow be conscious when the downfall of everything trump and MAGA occurs at last. He deserves to somehow know.

My deepest condolences, Marian. I’ve enjoyed Kevin’s blogging since the Calpundit days and, thanks to the odd world of the internet, sorta felt like I knew him. He will be missed

    Sadly,

So sorry to hear this. Been reading Kevin since Calpundit and met him and Marian at Farmers Market a couple of times back in the day. He will be missed.

My sympathies to Marian. I will miss Kevin's lively input, his cat pictures, and most of all, his dedication to using empirical data to illuminate the public discourse

I am so sorry for your loss. I looked forward to reading Kevin's incisive analysis first thing every morning and several times later in the day. I will deeply miss that.

Many years ago I was led to Kevin’s blog via a link from another blogger, Mark Evanier. Mark has posted an obit which I will link:
    https://www.newsfromme.com/2025/03/10/kevin-drum-r-i-p/

    Mr. Evanier ends by saying:
“ One thing I learned from him is that an awful lot of Bad News we see in the headlines is not as bad as it seems.”
I agree with that, but though it might not make many headlines the news of Kevin’s passing is every bit as “bad news” as it seems. I will miss Kevin and his insights, charts, and photos. A very sad day.

I'm so sorry for your loss. So many of us now have lost a dear friend (who we never met) who entertained and informed us many times a day for decades. he will be missed. God bless you all.

My deepest condolences. As a big fan I am used to checking for new posts several times a day. I will greatly miss Kevin's insight into so many things.

RIP Kevin & condolences to Marian and the kitties. My econ students benefitted from many tidbits I picked up from this blog and its antecedents, one of the best spaces on the internet for combining progressive values with academic rigor. Kevin was transparent, honest, and easy to follow, all keys to the genre of analytic journalism that he helped create. Kevin Drum was truly a golden figure from the golden age of the internet.

It seems Kevin was right in his last post...
"These guys are going to kill me before they figure out what's wrong."

How incredibly sad. I've been reading Kevin since his MoJo days and whether I agreed with him or not, I always appreciated his thoughtful posts and sincere beliefs. Every post of his was a must-read. I wish only the best for Marian and the cats in this difficult time. Thanks for everything, KD!

I am so very, very sorry to hear this. Kevin was fantastic - smart, insightful, self-effacing, witty, intellectually curious, dedicated to chasing down actual facts/evidence, a great photographer, a great observer/interpreter of cats, etc., and has been a significant part of my life for decades even though we have never met. You have my strongest possible condolences (I don't do Facebook anymore, so leaving this here).

May you rest in peace Kevin. Marian, I offer my heartfelt condolences to you and your family. Kevin’s openness and honesty in his writing made me feel as though I knew him and he and this community will be missed.

I'm so sorry, Marian. He will be sorely missed, by so many of us who visited here. I looked forward almost every day to seeing what Kevin had to say. I'll miss, too, the many very-smart people I've "met" here, a community held together by Kevin's provocation to thought and the data (oh, those graphs!) and analysis he contributed to those thoughts. That, too, is now lost.

I hope you and your cats live long (and many?) lives and find peace and joy in his memory.

Farewell. Kevin. And farewell to all of you who have regularly added so much insight and wisdom to the conversations here.

Marian, I’m so sorry to hear this, and I know how hard it is to muster the energy to make this kind of direct announcement while absorbing such a blow. I’ve been reading Kevin’s work for most of my adult life, and want you to know that he made a lot of strangers smarter and better individuals by sharing with them. Best to you, the cats, and all who knew and loved Kevin.
