Keep fighting, Kevin. I've been reading you for many years and you, more than anyone, have helped me broaden my perspective on many issues. You are in my prayers.
For the past 10 years, you have been a lone voice of sanity for me amid all of the chaos. Please come back.
"Life is tragic simply because the earth turns and the sun inexorably rises and sets, and one day, for each of us, the sun will go down for the last, last time.
Perhaps the whole root of our trouble, the human trouble, is that we will sacrifice all the beauty of our lives, will imprison ourselves in totems, taboos, crosses, blood sacrifices, steeples, mosques, races, armies, flags, nations, in order to deny the fact of death, the only fact we have. It seems to me that one ought to rejoice in the fact of death — ought to decide, indeed, to earn one's death by confronting with passion the conundrum of life. One is responsible for life: It is the small beacon in that terrifying darkness from which we come and to which we shall return."
— James Baldwin
In other words, it's not tragic, just how things are, a gift, life, to live to its fullest, however that translates for you, nothing goes with you, not even yourself, though for a while, some will remember, but that's their journey, which too will pass.
Hopefully Kevin has a Lazarus left in him tho...
Kevin we are pulling for you. Keep up the good fight.
“It’s not the strength of the body that counts, but the strength of the spirit.” —J.R.R. Tolkien. You have a very strong spirit, hopefully strong enough to carry you through this.
You've been a part of my daily life for over twenty years now, going back to the CalPundit days.
It's been a joy to read you all this time, and I'm grateful for it. I'll be grateful for however much more I may get.
Good luck.
Best wishes….in good faith….
Hope things improve and you get back on the journey forward. Strength to your family and friends and wisdom to your caregivers. Best of luck!
you have been my morning star for over twenty years; wishing you and marian all the happiness you both deserve
So sorry to hear this news, Kevin. You, along with Digby, Atrios and a couple of others were my first bloggers. I started reading you, I think, just after your move over to Washington Monthly. I hope the prognosis is wrong and you get better. Will be thinking of you.
So sorry to hear this Kevin - you're a major reason I started writing about politics, I'll always appreciate you for that. Hope this is just a temporary setback.
Grateful to know you, at least on the Internet. Thank you for being here. Thanks for all the wonderful images! Keeping you and your family, including cats, in my thoughts.
You're the first person I read every morning. You've mattered. I hope to be reading more from you soon.
I discovered you in 2002 during the run up to the Iraq invasion and you've been my daily dose of sanity ever since. Stay strong!
this my first click every morning. I can't thank you enough for all the work you do
Kevin allows me to complain about things and that is all that keeps me going.
I’m thinking of the whole Drum family on this side of the rainbow bridge, Hoping to give strength to Marian.
Oh, Kevin, you have meant so much to me over the years. I cannot count how many times I have sent one of your pieces to a friend or family member with "this is the guy who makes sense of it all" notes. We need you! Keep going for all of us, please. I have followed you from site to site...and will follow you as long as you keep writing.
After years of taking drugs to suppress immune response, it's darn hard to fight off a lung infection, but it isn't impossible. I hope you beat the odds and have a full recovery.
Kevin, I have been reading your work consistently since the Calpundit days and often shared your analyses broadly. Please know how much you mean to so many and, if your time is up, leave us knowing you have made a huge and positive difference in your life.
Here's wishing you a fast recovery. Your blog is the best BS-clearing site on the web, and has been my only indispensible blog.
Kevin, I want to add to the chorus of appreciation for you, your voice, your calm, and your data-based analysis of all things. You have been influential on my thinking on innumerable issues. Each of us in your audience feels like we have a relationship with you, even when you do not know us. So this may feel strange to read, but I suspect I am not the only one to say that there are many people out here who love you, me most definitely included.
You’re only a decade older than I am, so it’s too soon. Seriously, please get better— we all have to outlive the assholes.
Marian, if you're reading this and there is anything those of us in SoCal can do to help, please let us know.
Kevin, hang in there. You've survived two cancers, you can survive this.
Art Eclectic, thank you for putting into words what I was struggling to express.
Wish you the best, Kevin. Your article in Mother Jones on the effects of eliminating lead in gasoline is one of my favorite of all times, because it demonstrates how complex the world around us is. This is what you've been doing on your blog as well. Take care!
Kevin - I have enjoyed your work since the CalPundit days. Fight your fight as best you can. We'll pick it up for you when you need us to.
Since the election I have allowed my efforts to wane. On your behalf I promise to renew and expand my resistance to MAGA/christian* nationalism.
*Spell check always wants me to capitalize but I refuse since they are not actually followers of Christ.
If Kevin is dying, then I'm losing a friend. I've learned a lot from you Kevin, including about how to write really well and how not to be full of shit. And how not to be self-pitying, which is exemplified by this terse and factual description of Kevin's apparent demise. Kevin if you're reading this, thank you for making my day a little smarter and funnier, every day for years.
Oh man. Guess I just wanted to chime in to say how much I've enjoyed the blog. Pulling for you and your family.
Pneumonia is hell but it can be beaten. Having the body in a complete sedentary state while letting the antibodies do their work is effective but requires a strong constitution. With optimal care, there is a good chance you can beat this KD, good luck.
