I Can’t Resist Rooting For the Bucs Today

It's hard to believe that I find myself rooting for Tom Brady in the Super Bowl, but there you have it. There's just something I can't resist about old folks proving they still have it.

Speaking of, Serena Williams isn't quite in her 40s yet, but she'll be looking once again for her 24th grand slam singles title starting tomorrow at the Australian Open. Hooray for us fall chickens!

I'm older and the answer is still No, No, No more Tom Brady. Having watched him for the past 20 years in New England I am thoroughly sick of him and was so long before the MAGA gear appeared in his locker. He is a supremely gifted QB and has worked very hard at his craft and he is maybe the best quick reader of defenses we've ever seen in the NFL and these are things to admire. I'm still sick of him and will enjoy watching him scream at others along the sidelines as his team gets squashed by the Chiefs.

I understand Kevin Drum's sentiment, & loathe the name of the KC team, BUT didn't respect the Patriots or Brady's palling around with trump, so will say that I'm rooting for Mahomes & the KC team.

Older than Kevin, so feel entitled to not use his rationale.

I can't root for either team, I hate Tom Brady and do not like the Chief's name or the tomahawk chop. Oh heck I've been meh about the NFL for about the last 15-20 years, hated the forced patriotism the smothering of Colin Kapernick and the sweeping under the rug of so much loathsome behavior .

        1. KawSunflower

I admit to never having cared about pro football until Kaepernick was vilified. The one good thing done by the NFL - at Biden's request? - has been to ready the stadiums for COVID-19 vaccinations (& testing previously). Actually, not much for pro baseball, either, but will always root for Steve Goodman's Cubs. Otherwise, I stick with college basketball & track.

If TB12 wins his 7th Super Bowl, he can stay back in Florida & hit Disneyworld & Maralago in a whirlwind two days.

What's wrong with the "Chiefs" name? It's not like its derogatory. I could understand the case against the Redskins name but not with the Chiefs.

        1. KawSunflower

Because cultural appropriation by those who are not of Native American ancestry is not really better than an ethnic slur, even though the "optics" may seem better.

The "chop" got its start at Florida State University. I remain agnostic as to whether or not this should be considered racist. I will say the FSU has worked to maintain an excellent relationship with the Seminole Nation.

            1. KawSunflower

Still dislike the chop, remembering how the Seminole were mutilated in death for bounties, but appreciate the info regarding FSU.

I wonder if El Jefe felt doublecrossed by Bob Kraft, after Mr. Kraft went behind the White House's back & used the Patriots team plane to ferry PPE to Massachusetts for RINO Gov. Charlie Baker. Especially after I am sure El Jefe went to bat behind the scenes to keep the CCTV footage from the massage parlor out of public record.

As a long-time Boston Celtics fan (through their glory years) and four-year season ticket holder, I have to root for older players and players nobody else much wanted in the draft. The Celts for many years beat the pants off everybody else in the league with these guys, and only Larry Bird broke the pattern a little. Nobody wanted him, either, because he had to finish a military comitment before he was free to start playing in the NBA, and the other teams didn't want to risk waiting for him. Ha ha ha!

So I'm for Brady by instinct.

Bill Russell & KC Jones were two-time NCAA champions at U. of San Francisco, & Olympic gold medalists. Cousy was a Holy Cross standout. Havlicek played on an NCAA Final Four team at Ohio State.

Come off it with the underdog nonsense.

& Brady? He went to Junipero Serra High, then Ann Arbor. He was drafted high to play baseball out of high school. He started at Michigan (yes, eventually, but position battles are not uncommon) over another MLB caliber talent, Drew Henson.

Better watch out, Kevin. Boomers are being trashed again on Twitter today because someone broke a guitar something something SNL. Any damn excuse, apparently.

    1. MontyTheClipArtMongoose

      That guitar smash was weak.

I award no points just because it was a woman six stringer doing it.

Also, pretty sure all 4'10" of Marissa Paternostro could do a better job of it, were Screaming Females the type of band that SNL would invite on.

Hell, Li'l Wayne would do a better job smashing a guitar!

I heard something about there being a bunch of commercials to watch.

I have an interesting data point regarding the comment button. While it works fine on my desktop and phone, on my iPad it exhibits the same symptoms that you have: I get a spinner that never stops spinning.

So I don't think it has anything to do with the method of signing in (which is the same on all three for me). Who knows, maybe a cache clearing is in order.

I watched FA WSL action on NBCsn, Arsenal losing 2-1 to Manchester City at home. No. 15 from Arsenal was everywhere getting battered.

When you have been caught cheating more than once, that means you have gotten away with cheating a time or two. Respect what Brady has done at his age (although it has been more about leadership rather than his on-the-field performance), but I’m going with the Chefs, even though I don’t like them either. .... I know! I’ll cheer for The Weeknd to kill at halftime. Let’s go out there and have a great national anthem! ....

Wait ... PUPPY BOWL!!!!! I’m cheering for the puppies!

    1. iamr4man

Currently dealing with the “Puppy Bowl” 24/7. It will be easier and more fun after she is potty trained. Also after she gets her last parvo vaccine so we can feel comfortable walking her in the neighborhood.
She is a little sweetie though and was way more fun than the game.

Going with Patrick Mahomes II, despite earlier fears of Suburban Texas style MAGAdom, because he turned it around on BLM, has a solid relationship with his LGBTQ+ brother, is engaged to a woman who owns part of a women's soccer team (after playing competitively herself thru college), & sounds like Alex Jones without the crackpottery.

I remember going to the BOSTON Patriots home games in year one and two of their existence when they played at Harvard Stadium. The ticket sellers used to let the hookers in for free to help the working girls.
But after all their history from Belechick stiffing the other team when he quit after one day of being hired. Video gate, deflate gate, supporting Trump, happy endings and all that I gave up on them
Good to see an old guy playing well but other than that? Meh

    1. MontyTheClipArtMongoose

If Bob Kraft & Harvard were worth their weight in net worth & endowment respectively, they would come together to privately fund an update of Harvard Stadium for the school football team & the New England Revolution MLS side. & maybe a Revolution side for the NWSL, while we're at it.

There is no reason that the soccer team plays in oversized Gillette in gotdamn Foxbourough. & there is no reason a city with as many colleges as it has can't support a women's pro soccer team. (RIP BREAKERS)

If watching golf on tv is like watching flies fuck watching baseball is like adding another fly.

    We're talking about baseball, right?

    1. MontyTheClipArtMongoose

      Wrong!

Watching golf on teevee is a great soundtrack for a nap, or a bit of light reading. Would say it's closer to flies dumbly flying into flypaper.

Baseball, though, is almost perfect for principal entertainment.

Patriots didn't have the assets to compete for a championship this season even if they had retained Brady's services. So, as much I hated to see him leave New England, it all turned out about as well as could be expected for Pats/Brady fans.

Now, if he has a lick of sense Brady will retire in a blaze of glory. But he won't.

      1. Ken Rhodes

Oh, and speaking of Old, and of Unretiring, don't forget Arians. He also had to unretire, and he's now the oldest head coach to win the big one.

        1. MontyTheClipArtMongoose

Thing of it is, had Indianapolis allowed results & not sentiment to dictate their coaching position, they could have eased out Chuck Pagano (over his head as head coach) & kept Arians, & this Super Bowl might have just as well been Andrew Luck's 2nd or 3rd ring.

Make Pagano a team vice president/special assistant to analytics & football technology dept, & leave his friend Arians in charge of onfield operations, it's best of both worlds.

Both would have had a ring by 2015.

I've hated/respected Brady for many years. As a lifelong Buccaneers fan I had no trouble rooting for him yesterday and I'm enjoying the reactions of all the haters today. Brady is an amazing guy and he brought a championship mentality to Tampa but he did not win the game single handedly. I mean it wasn't Brady who kept the Chiefs offense out of the end zone for 4 quarters.
