In the wake of President Biden's executive order banning asylum for people who cross the border illegally, total border encounters continued to drop substantially in June:
CBP recorded 130,000 crossings in June, down by more than 40,000 from May. Of those, 88,000 were illegal crossings and 42,000 were asylum requests, mostly scheduled via the CBP One app.
There he goes again. How does anybody know what a significant variation in these numbers is? How do you measure the accuracy of these "encounters" in terms of actual border crossings?
Obviously the level is up starting in 2021, but variations after that may not mean anything. It does not look like the level has dropped since the end of Title 42.
Either Biden's policy is working or, as Kevin has pointed out a number of times here, the biggest driver of immigration -- legal and non -- is the economy. The vast, vast majority of people seeking "asylum" are just traditional economic migrants looking for better job opportunities and as word spreads that farms, nurseries, and packing plants aren't hiring like they used to, the numbers will dwindle.
