Immigrants are pretty law-abiding people

I was browsing around at studies of crime committed by immigrants and came across this from the Heritage Foundation:

Increased Illegal Immigration Brings Increased Crime: Almost 2/3 of Federal Arrests Involve Noncitizens

A 2021 Department of Justice report revealed that 64% of federal arrests in 2018 involved noncitizens, despite them comprising only 7% of the population at that time.

Shazam! Noncitizen immigrants comprise 64% of all federal arrests!

Well.......no. That number includes federal arrests for immigration offenses—which, by definition, are limited to immigrants.¹ The number for ordinary criminal offenses in 2018, the final year of the DOJ report, was 9.8%:

Here are incarceration rates from a recent study of men aged 18-40 (both citizen and noncitizen) that goes back more than a hundred years:

For the past half century, the incarceration rate of Latino immigrants has been lower than that of native borns. In the most recent year studied, incarceration rates for first-generation immigrants were a full quarter lower than for native borns.

¹It's worth nothing that federal arrests are a small fraction of all arrests and probably aren't a good measure of anything. Still, if you're going to do it, you need to do it right.

I wonder if Paul Krugman has written recently about Heritage being hackish. I recall that he did so, more than once, years ago.

"They should be arrested because they're criminals." Also, "Of course they're criminals! Look how often they get arrested!"

It looks like up until WWII, there's a racial component to the disparate incarceration rates, and then both rise as the criminalization of everything starts in the 80s, peaking at the point where we decided to decriminalize minor stuff.

Wait what?! The Heritage Foundation cherry-picking to an absurd extreme in order to justify hating on non-White people?! It's unpossible!

And Republicans -- MAGAts and Good Germans alike -- will nod their heads sagely: "see, I told you so!" something something Joe Biden border something.

They are shameless. They lie shamelessly, they all know they're lying and why they're lying, and they do it anyway. It's depraved.

It is still good to refute them. I think there's this nostalgia around Heritage; in the pre-internet days they could sound less awful. Now they're effectively Breitbart for a slightly different market segment.

This is some intern hitting their blog quota via half-ass googling. But crap like that then ends up in the Congressional Record after house staffers do the same thing, hitting their quota for talking points.

And the cycle of life is complete.

OT: Are you going to examine the Hualien earthquake in Taiwan, in comparison to how it survived with few casualties and damage relative to the 1994 Northridge and 1989 Loma Prieta?

Actually, would be interesting to know how many crimes are committed AGAINST immigrants.

I’ll bet it’s a lot because I constantly hear of tools being stolen from handymen/workers etc.

and I'll bet those crimes go MASSIVELY under-reported, in the same way as immigrants tend to underuse public facilities like county hospitals, and for the same reason.

Quite apart from the simple inhumanity of the way immigrants are treated generally, it is particularly outrageous the way they're taken advantage of otherwise -- lousy wages, outright wage theft, other forms of theft, etc. -- as though it's a right. It's just appalling.
