Let’s Sabotage Ron DeSantis’s Stupid Survey

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, in an effort to maintain his leadership in the people's struggle against oppressive Critical Race Theory indoctrination, has signed a bill that sets up an annual survey of the "college community":

Under HB 233, signed by DeSantis on June 22, the Florida Board of Education will now require Florida colleges to survey students every year and assess “the intellectual freedom and viewpoint diversity” at each institution....In this case, college community refers to students, faculty and staff. The survey will check how free they feel to express their own beliefs and viewpoints while on campus and in the classroom.

This is great. If Florida progressives have any sense, they will organize a campaign of mass lying on this survey. The results, when tallied, will show that higher education in Florida is chock full of conservatives who feel completely free to express their admiration for Comrade DeSantis and the tenets of kulturkampf Trumpism. The whole thing should be turned into a ridiculous embarrassment that exposes the shallowness of DeSantis's claims to managerial competence.

So let's get on this, OK?

I think DeSantis' idea is commendable. It's past time engineering students were free to tell their math lecturers they don't know what they're talking about. Business students likewise must be empowered to speak out about the evils of the capitalist system that teaches courses intended to help firms make profits. As for theology courses ... they can only benefit from the vocal contributions of atheists and Satanists. And anarchists will provide some refreshing perspectives to the law schools.

Florida looks set to become the home of a flourishing American intellectual renewal.

I really don't think it'll survive long enough to produce a single survey.

But frankly, one would expect that most students will simply ignore it. No meaningful statistical analysis can be extracted from a survey that suffers from strong participation bias.

Nah. DiSantis already has the press release written, detailing the terrible trauma that is almost universal among innocent Floridian college students due to close encounters with... well, it doesn't matter, does it? Regardless, the actual results will never see the light of day.

DeSantis couldn't care less about the policy itself, or whether it survives a court challenge. He's throwing meat to the base in anticipation of his 2022 and 2024 campaigns. The more outrageous -- and the more media coverage -- the better.

(It's probably a good sign for Democrats he's this concerned about his base; an incumbent with an expanding economy -- probably rapidly expanding in the case of Florida -- by rights should be a pretty heavy favorite for reelection. I suspect stunts like this indicate his internal polling says otherwise. Or maybe he's mainly looking ahead to the 2024 nomination run).
