Because of the extreme heat in Rome I've been waking up early and wandering around before I start to melt. On Saturday I walked over to the Colosseum, which I wasn't even planning to visit on this trip, and took pictures at around 5 am. This turned out to be well worthwhile: the sodium lights and the deep blue pre-dawn sky combined to produce some beautiful images.
The Colosseum at night is home to dozens of knots of kids doing normal kid stuff (drinking, Lime-ing, showing off, etc.). It's also probably the safest place in the city since police outnumber the kids about two to one. But no cats. This is a mystery.
Kids scare away possible murder victims.
I had to look up "Lime-ing". Sounds like Rome has a cluster of Zen Buddhist monks hanging out at the Coliseum!
A Lime is an electric scooter that you rent by the minute. Very popular in Rome and other big cities. I should have downloaded their app and given it a try, but I never got around to it.
Awallllll....That's what the phrase meant as you used it...so ahead of the times, Sir, so ahead of the times.
Be that as it may, tooling around the flats of the Colosseum has got to be safer than the streets of SoCal at any time of the day or night.
I looked at renting one a could weeks ago in the GasLamp Quarter in San Diego...but it became abundantly clear very quickly that I was going to kill myself, at my own fault, in nighttime San Diego traffic. (I am sure that daytime would have been equally dangerous to an old, clumsy and foolish gentleman. {I was down there to do some snorkeling in La Jolla Cover and Marine Preserve...but the wide ocean is one kind of dangerous, a two wheeled scooter is a whole different kind of danger!})
Glad you are well. Best Wishes, Traveller
Since Wanderin ` looked it up...I had to also. I rather like this....(not that I personally can live it).
"Verb version of acronym LIME: Living In the Moment Everyday. It's about embracing life, not being a pansy, and embracing the moment. Like YOLO or Carpe Diem,"
Best Wishes, Traveller
Re Safety....I presume Kevin knows the rules...first he seems kind of large which helps have bad people look elsewhere; 2nd, Run, seriously, if you can...there is no ego loss of self in being smart; 3rd, if you can't get away....give everything they might want graciously...say thank you, turn and leave.
Simple rules, but important.
Stunning pic!
Here, kitty, kitty!
When are they going to fix that place up?
Your comment is too funny. If they are going to "restore it", perhaps restore it to when they had warships in there fight each other.
Yes, a stunning shot.
But maybe cats avoid the place because of its having been a killing floor; I wouldn't blame them.
When I was there in 1974 the place was full of feral cats. When I returned in1984 there were none. Since they allow people to wonder around the Coliseum more than they did back then it would make sense to keep the cats out.
I too was there in 1974 amid many cats. The tour "guide" told every blonde she looked like Sophia Loren and he he told each brunette she looked like Bardot. Ah well.
Somewhere I have a few photos of cats in the Colloseum in 2012 and again in 2014 as well. Kevin I hope you have found your way to the Torre Argentina Cat Sanctuary - unsure of exact location but understand it to be a remnant of Pompei's Theatre.
