Lunchtime Photo

We interrupt our ongoing saga of Louisiana's swamps and bayous to bring you some breaking news. On Wednesday morning, shortly after I got on Interstate 10 heading east, I ran into this:

Now that's an accident! The odd thing is that the pickup doesn't look damaged at all. So how did it end up halfway across the median divider? I suppose I'll never know.

In any case, here's what the westbound side of the highway looked like:

November 3, 2021 — On I10 near Baton Rouge, Louisiana

Traffic was completely stopped for three miles. And since the highway is passing over a swamp, there's no escape.

I ran into three huge traffic jams on Wednesday, every one of them on the opposite side of the road. It was my lucky day.

Photos of swamps and other normal things will resume next week.

If movies are anything to go by the ghost escaped from hell they had in the back got loose and pulled the driver's soul halfway out of his body while he he screamed in agony and lost control of the pickup while his partner grabbed frantically at the wheel with one hand and pulled the gun loaded with cartridges filled with holy water out of the glove compartment, firing it at the attacking spirit and blinding the driver who dies of shock leaving his wife bereft, though not that bereft as she's been having an affair with our hero and she'll be fine, she's really pretty relieved, though now suddenly he's sort of not, and besides he has this ghost to track down, at large, out here, in turducken country.

Jersey barriers are engineered to prevent the vehicle from breaching the barrier into oncoming traffic while limiting damage to the vehicle and its occupants.

Local police are always conscious of revenue opportunities. Notice the cop in the lower left of the picture, ticket book in hand, heading for the unlucky pickup driver to give him a citation for illegal parking.

The truck was pulling the trailer with the yellow backhoe on it. Most likely some interesting dynamics and Kinematics go'n on. The backhoe might be loaded too far back on the trailer.

      Mini excavator not a backhoe.

And judging by the ridiculous mud tires mounted on a dually pulling a gooseneck trailer with that kinda weight…… well that’s about as shit kicker as it gets.

He's lucky he didn't do that a couple of miles downroad. He might have ended up eaten by the alligators in the Atchafalaya Swamp.

Yes, let's have the alligators eat the unwholly conservatives eat them all. Really, can't they just go away/be eaten?

    The stuff of panic attacks.

    Fuck driving through the swamp.

The suffering of southerners is a beautiful thing. I’m a terrible person, but some dude says I’m wrong to gloat. He says it’s time to appease republicans to avoid the end of democracy.

“Take the initiative to de-escalate partisan tensions. Conspicuously refrain from pushing for more government spending, more regulation, or more taxes. Declare victory on Covid and return to normalcy. Drop the rhetoric about “systemic racism” and end controversial indoctrination in public schools. In short, make peace from a position of strength. Say: “If we Democrats were half as bad as Republicans claim, we’d be pushing all kinds of crazy policies. Instead, we’re giving the country a much-needed four-year vacation from acrimony. For us, the preservation of American democracy has top priority.”

Would this work? Not on everyone, and certainly not on every Republican. Yet it would probably sway tens of millions of non-Democrats. And since the next election will otherwise be close, that’s crucial.”

I have, occasionally, thought democrats should run as competent managers of the status quo and skip all the spending. (Except for on war, of course. Biden can double defense spending and invade Ethiopia if he wants to.)

Tough call. Can’t we torture some Louisiana rednecks first?

    1. sfbay1949

I'm pretty sure Democrats HAVE run as competent managers. This won't work if conservatives are voting on being the more crazy party.

      1. Justin

They don’t really run on that… and certainly not as the primary selling point. They always have some program to do one thing or another. Appeasing republicans means they can’t do that… or anything.

For that particular stretch of I-10 it's called "normal". Loads of fun driving a big truck pulling a tanker loaded with Hazmat.

Just a taste of what's to come when America's Transportation Secretary is home breastfeeding the babies instead of doing his job.

The truck may appear to not have considerable damage, but wouldn't the fuel line be damaged? Maybe not on trucks - not familiar with them - but that kind of damage is dangerous.
