This is a lovely blue and green damselfly sitting near a stream in Giverny, about a mile from Monet's cottage. I had wandered off to the southern edge of town while I waited for the entry line to dissipate, and that's when I spotted this little guy. When I went back, the line was indeed gone. On the downside, I had used up an hour of our visiting time and had only an hour left. But that was enough.

That's one amazing photo! You really captured the colors and beauty of the insect.
That's a damselfly, rather than a dragonfly (among other things, the head structure is different between the two groups). I believe it's a male beautiful demoiselle (Calopteryx virgo), but I'm not really up on my non-North American odonates.
The ebony jewelwing (C. maculata) is a close relative that's found in the eastern U.S. I don't think there are any members of the genus in southern California.
Beautiful is right!
