Lunchtime Photo

The New York Times says the price of farmland in South Dakota is shooting up, so I thought I'd show you all a picture of what this beautiful land looks like. It's a shame that—

Oh, wait. This isn't South Dakota. It's the Quail Hill Open Space Preserve about a mile from my home. The whole thing amounts to a couple of acres of scrub bordering the San Diego Freeway, and I'm not quite sure why it qualifies for preserve status. But I'm sure there's a reason.

It's a place where you can find California Gnatcatchers, an indicator species of the quality of coastal scrub habitat (which has steadily disappeared over the years).

As a fellow Orange County resident (Midwest transplant) I get a kick out of seeing Kevin’s photos of local landmarks. I ride my bike thru Quail Hill all the time - it’s a great place to see . . . quail! Lots of roadrunners too.

I'm not surprised by the rising price of farmland. About a year ago I started getting spam suggesting I invest in farm land. It sounded like the capital glut was ready to turn another affordable and essential real world resource into an expensive and problematic investment for those with too much money and nothing to spend it on.
Taxes on the wealthy and wages are just way too low. We'll strangle on this.
