Here is my third triptych of the week, a series of views of the Arc de Triomphe in Paris.
The top one is at sunrise, taken from the Place de la Concorde looking west. The middle one is the same but taken later in the day. The bottom one is midafternoon, taken from La Défense looking east.

Why are the skyscrapers at La Défense visible in #2 but not #1?
The second shot is from a higher vantage point (and different zoom level). In the first shot, the buildings are below the tree horizon. Look at the relative height of the oddly shaped tower to the right.
Yep, although I think they are actually behind the Arc not below the tree horizon. It is a similar effect to how if you put your hand 3 inches in front of your face it obscures more than it does a foot away.
