This is what December and January have looked like here in Southern California: either stormy and threatening to rain, or else just raining. This picture was taken halfway up Mt. Baldy Road looking south toward Upland. It wasn't raining when I took it, but about half an hour later it started coming down.

Very grim, and therefore arty.
Years into a drought it is more uplifting than grim.

Here in Iowa the past six weeks have been like Oetzi the Iceman's armpit.
Any Replicants in flying cars?
Dear Kevin:
Mt Baldy, (really Mt San Antonio), has quite the history of being one of the most deadly mountains in the United States. I was coming back from Court a couple of weeks ago from way out in San Bernardino, turned right went up to Mt. Baldy.
There are two images, the first most people liked shot from the summit of Cajon Pass...and the one I preferred...trying to climb the damned thing in a suit.
Still, the history and often deadly history is in the comments below the images. If anyone has time, they are best read from the bottom up. Because the weather was good, these are completely different than yours. Best Wishes, T

Right now the temperature is 28 degrees, the highest it's been in almost two weeks and the woman next door is wandering around the yard with her dog, wearing flip-flops.
I've seen this phenomena elsewhere as well. No matter how cold it is there will be women going about in sandals. Why?
I spent a year teaching at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks. The day in the spring when it first went up to 19 degrees (Fahrenheit), most of the students were out in T-shirts and shorts.
in my undergraduate time, any sunny day with temps up in the 40s, the sorority women who lived next door to us would grab beach towels, don bikinis and soak up a few rays while probably catching a cold or two.
Dated Jan. 19. Julian Sands went missing Jan. 13. So he's out there somewhere...

Commentary: Stay off Mt. Baldy. It’s dangerous, and rescue workers deserve a break
Three years ago, when one of those hikers went missing in poor weather, Staples and 125 other people set out to find him. Sadly, the search was suspended not when the hiker was found (his remains were discovered the following June), but when Staples slipped on the mountain and died. He had been a search-and-rescue volunteer for nine years.
I think about Staples and every other rescue worker whenever someone goes missing in the San Gabriel Mountains — and there have been a lot of them lately. In January alone, 15 lost or hurt hikers have been recovered from the area around Baldy, and at least two tragically have died.
The rescue workers who looked for them in dangerous conditions selflessly provide a safety backstop so we outdoor enthusiasts can explore the wilderness at Los Angeles’ doorstep. At a minimum, the rescuers deserve our good judgment of whether it’s too dangerous to venture out.
And right now, as a semi-serious hiker, I can tell you that the smartest and most considerate mountaineers are staying home. It’s too dangerous to be on Baldy.
I thought it never rained in southern California. Did pop music lie to me?
It seems as our assumptions keep crashing...that everyone is lying or wrong. It is cold....down even in the Los Angeles suburbs...it was 36 last night for me....and my nice but very old and drafty house was also cold-cold....lol (am I going to freeze to death in SoCal?...grin)
