Lunchtime Photo

It's hummingbird season again, and I have several who buzz around my window these days. The top picture is (I think) a mature Allen's hummingbird, while the bottom picture is a young 'un.

I realize that I posted a picture of a hummingbird just about a month ago, but what can I say? I like hummingbirds.

humming birds are something of a rarity for us, or at least seeing them is rare. a few years back we camped on garden key in the dry tortugas national park and about three or four ruby-throated humming birds feasted on the nectar of a sea grape tree. could have spent the day watching them.

    These are really great!

Later in the year, when the Hesperaloe (aka "red yucca") is flowering, they're all over it. But my photography skills are near nil, so I'm really grateful for your photos.

I think the "young" bird may be an adult female. On young males, the sides of the face are usually either whitish or have some orange, rather than the dark green that this bird shows.

Hummingbirds are amazing. They are New World birds, only found over here in India. There are something like 366 species over a wide range of habitats, but there are very few species that breed in North America north of Mexico. So keep the photos coming. I feed them year 'round, mostly Anna's hb. They need the help to overwinter in my area of the PNW. Once the flowers get going, they do fine without sugar water, but I like to have them come where I can see them.
