You can tell that this bird has had a hard life. The small holes in the tail feathers (not the fraying at the ends, which is just abrasion) are indicative of weak barbs due to poor nutrition at the time that the feathers were growing out. It's similar to how you can quantify malnutrition in people via close examination of their hair.
The merde stinks the same, though.
People who see them on the ground, waddling in a large group & competing for food, may regard them as ungainly, noisy, & in the way, but all birds capable of flying are surely beautiful in flight.
OT: Since Kevin Drum sometimes comments on Washington Post items, I am wondering if today's article about possible methods of changing representation in the House will cause him to weigh on suggested methods.
I thought the same in Europe, and especially Japan - the birds and squirrels were just a little cuter, pretty, more regal… And the flora in Japan - it’s like nature invented the harmony, kawaii thing, and the people absorbed it from their environment.
But I also think there’s bias of perspective going on, finding evidence of things you are disposed to believe already.
Fun factoid: according to "Birdnote", the reason the edges of those wing feathers are black is because the heavy presence of melanin makes them stronger and wear better.
Fun Factoid: when you see a bird take to flight, it’s not unusual to see a cat on the ground beneath.
Kevin,
I am French and disagree with your statement.
A real elegant French Pigeon would wear a scarf.
