This is a church in Redlands. It is on a hill. Therefore it is called the Church on the Hill. I like the fact that they didn't overthink this.

I thought it was common to name churches (other than culturamonuments) by their confession. The "catholic church" or the Lutheran church" etc.

Common practice, but not required. There are also quite a few non-denominational churches.

Fundagelical denominations are multiplying like rabbits nowadays, and most of them don't mention any confession or denomination in their names. Hillsong. New Song. There's a church across the street from me called Coast City Church, and downtown we have a Rhythm Church. My cousin in Virginia Beach used to go to a Wave Church. Yes, really. I get the feeling these places hire branding consultants to pick these names.

If you like geographically self-explanatory names for churches, best to avoid Memphis. Bellevue Baptist Church is 14 miles away from Bellevue Avenue, from which it got its name. Its previous location is now the home of Mississippi Boulevard Christian Church -- an even more specific name -- which is 3 miles away from Mississippi Boulevard.
Very nice photo, by the way.

We have a church on the Interstate. We call it Our Lady of I-75.
