This is our nation's Capitol, where every day our elected representatives undertake their solemn duty to advance the public weal. It brings a flutter to your heart, doesn't it?
At the time I was there, the Capitol building was covered in scaffolding. This angle, along with the intervening flora, is a clever way of taking a picture with no scaffolding in view.

I'm a retired civil servant: 30 years, USEPA. I'm well aware of the reality of the shenanigans that have gone on in the Capital (and SC and Executive Branch buildings). Still, yes, it makes my heart flutter whenever I'm on the Mall. I still have hope we'll muddle through somehow, and I remember the noble things that have come out of those places.
Like +20. In spite of the last 50 odd (very odd) years, I still believe.
Nice photo, by the way! I'd never have guessed about the scaffolding.
The picture almost makes it look like the building sits in the middle of a swamp …
Well, it is the Western Shore.

To be fair, it would be helpful if the nation sent its best and brightest to DC, instead of dumping their trashiest and dumbest here.
That requires the best and brightest being willing to stand for office.
I was a Marylander a while ago, even with the proximity and regularity of visiting the District, it still touches you.
In addition to many hours spent in Washington's federal & Smithsonian buildings, other favorite memories include summer evenings sitting on a Mall bench listening to a live fanfare at the "castle," as well as concerts at the Watergate (not the hotel of greater notoriety).
Some of the most somber return visits have been the recent ones to pay my respects to Congressmen Cummings & Lewis.
It's such a great building. It's a shame it's not as accessible to the public as it used to be. I remember as a kid going to meet my father for lunch in the cafeteria in the basement and riding the building's internal subway system.
The Capitol, deep in the weeds.
That scans.
