Takeoff from John Wayne Airport over the 405 freeway. On windy days planes take off to the north, rather than heading out south over the ocean as they usually do.

Planes take off to the north when there's an offshore wind, as during a Santa Ana. Otherwise the prevailing wind is from the cold ocean to the warmer interior.
Right. I see from Weather Underground that the wind at John Wayne was from the northeast at 15 or so mph pretty much all day on January 26th of 2023.
The runway is too short to entertain much tailwind there.
