Lunchtime Photo

Do snakes yawn? This one does. It's a cape cobra at the Los Angeles Zoo, and it was slithering along in its normal snakey way when it stopped, yawned, and then continued on its travels.

But snakes don't yawn because they're tired. They yawn after meals to realign their jaws.

I saw a Cape cobra in the wild at Sandveld Nature Reserve in South Africa. It was about 4 ft long, and crossed the road in front of us. We would not have immediately realized that it was a cobra had a truck not zoomed by our stopped car, causing the snake to rear up and flare its hood.
