Sunset at the Desert Lily Sanctuary in Chuckwalla Valley. This is where I go (almost) every month to skygaze, and I have yet to see any lilies. Of course, I've never been there in daytime, and I've never walked beyond the parking area. Maybe I should leave early and check it out for real the next time I go out.

Drift, concerning the bridge collapse and anchors. Exactly what the pilot was going for isn’t stated.
Still, it would seem the pilot on board the ship ordered one dropped:

100,000 tons at 8 knots or so with about two minutes between command and collision (minus reflex time to confirm the order, drop the anchor, get enough chain out (probably 3 shots (90ft a shot)), get the brake set, and hope it sets or drags (pretty sure it's a muddy bottom), was a canned response. There wasn't any time, the casualty took steering (that's my speculation), full reverse (the black exhaust cloud), just a quick set of the worst case events in the wrong place.
I'm unsure of the current at the time or the tide and wind, but there was nothing stopping that monster for miles even with tug support.
Don't forget to take a torch to look at night...
Let's also see some chuckwallas next time, too!
Maybe whoever named the sanctuary was thinking of the Sego Lily or Datura. They live in deserts like chuckwallas and have nice white flowers
The preserve isn't for sego lilies or Datura. It's for the desert lily: https://www.desertusa.com/flowers/desert-lily.html and https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/desert-lily-sanctuary. The preserve is in the low desert and is too hot and dry for the sego lily.
