Quote of the day: “Great question”

From Rep. Blake Moore, asked why Democrats would vote for a spending bill that had killed off all of their priorities:

Great question.

Republicans can't pass anything by themselves because they're in such violent disarray. They know this perfectly well. They need Democratic votes. But Elon Musk and Donald Trump seem to think they can remove everything Democrats want and still get their votes anyway. Those must be some good drugs they're taking.

On related lines, I continue to be astonished at how openly Trump is absolutely petrified of having to raise the debt limit while he's in office. "Everything should be done, and fully negotiated, prior to my taking office on January 20th, 2025," he demanded.

Sure, Donald. Any other routine parts of governing you'd like taken care of before you move in? Just let us know.

Of course, for my money Trump should invoke the 14th Amendment and simply insist the debt ceiling has no validity. Neither Obama nor Biden ever had the stones to pull this off, but I expect better from Trump. He's not afraid of a little whining from disloyal Republicans, is he?

There is more to governance than kakistocracy and kleptocracy - two mutually reinforcing practices that Trump and his henchmen specialize in.

"Of course, for my money Trump should invoke the 14th Amendment and simply insist the debt ceiling has no validity."

A brilliant move, Donald. Do it! Do it now!

Today is a bad day for:
    - Donald Trump
    - Mike Johnson
    - The GOP and MAGA
    - Wall Street
    - Crypto

It's a bad day for Elon Musk too but he doesn't know it yet.

It's feels like a bad day for everyone with a 401(k), and it is, but the political damage to the GOP may make it worth it.

Already the worst administration in modern history, as everyone can see, and it's still more than another month before they take office.

"seem to think they can remove everything Democrats want and still get their votes anyway"

Which is one of the major points of trying to make it about the debt ceiling-- Dems *always* want to raise it because they're responsible about federal credit and governance and boring shit like that and seem to think the debt ceiling matters. OTOH, the Krazy Kaukus Klowns will keep fighting both the extra money in the CR and raising the debt limit and they won't stop. So trump, maybe after huffing some kind of hopium, is trying to sucker the Ds into saving his ass. But most of the Ds seem okay with seeing it in a sling.

    Yeah, so politics ain't bean-bag.

I'm confident some Democrats would vote for a bill that had been stripped out of everything they wanted, purely to avoid the risk of being blamed for a government shutdown by Sean Hannity. It would let people like Jared Golden tell everyone in their district how they help moderate Republicans get around those crazy Freedom Caucus nuts.

    Problem Solvers' Caucus, dude!

Republicans can't pass anything by themselves because they're in such violent disarray.

You should never say this. First, you relieve responsibility of Republicans to carry out the very values and solutions they sold voters on, on their way to sweeping federal government. Second, you're implying that Democrats have a responsibility to compromise.

There's a difference between bipartisanship, chasing solutions that both sides can agree on, and compromise where both sides are unhappy with having to give to get. If the GOP can't figure out how to compromise, why is that the Democrats' problem?

If Democrats are too willing to compromise, it makes Democrats look weak on values. That further adds evidence to those Democrats who sat on the sidelines that a vote for D is only nominally a vote for D values.

Racist troll gotta troll but do you know the dire economic shutdown during Christmas week will have in areas with a heavy concentration of government facilities?

Have you met any Democats? They'll fold like a cheap shirt.

Never mind a shutdown. If the House can't vote on a Speaker (if Mike Johnson runs into trouble, which is already happening) by January 6, there's a possibility that nobody will be in place to certify the election.

"Invoke the 14th Amendment"?? Republicans have been working hard to NEGATE the 14th!

    * Birthright citizenship: they want to strip this provision from the 14th
    * Treasonous seditionists can't run for federal office ever again: the Supreme Court ruled that sedition is just fine, thank you very much.
    * Not questioning the debt? What about all that talk the last time the Felon squatted in the White House, about giving bond holders "a haircut"? That is, DEFAULTING?

No, they won't invoke the 14th. They've always opposed it.

    NBC News reports (via Guardian):

Now, the president-elect has modified his demands, by telling NBC News in an interview that he wants the debt ceiling eliminated outright. “The Democrats have said they want to get rid of it. If they want to get rid of it, I would lead the charge,” Trump told the broadcaster."

    https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/live/2024/dec/19/congress-government-shutdown-spending-bill-trump

I'd say if they can get one or two other priorities as part of the bill, Democrats should take Trump up on such a deal. Right wing Randian heads would be exploding near and far. And I see very little prospect that the GOP could re-implement a debt ceiling in time for the next Democratic President to take over, because they face astronomical odds to hold onto their House majority.

The Democrats should create a list of their spending priorities, so that every time the Republicans balk, they can add another one from the list.

Squeeeeeze the Rs until they squeal and say "Okay".

Conceding, giving ground, and going along is a way toward defeat. We go toward victory.

  10. geordie

Eliminating the debt ceiling for the Trump administration is away of supporting large tax cuts and therefore the Dems should vote against it.

  11. ColBatGuano

Sure Donald, the Dems would love to eliminate the debt ceiling before you get into office so you can run against them for it in 2026. How could they refuse such a generous offer.
