Quote of the day: The speaker strikes back

From Kevin McCarthy at a closed-door meeting of the Republican caucus, daring hard-right loonies to oust him:

You guys think I’m scared of a motion to vacate. Go f---ing ahead and do it. I’m not scared.

You tell 'em, Kevin.

Yea, though he walks through the Valley of the Shadow, Kevin McCarthy is not afraid, 'cause he is the baddest badass in the Valley.

Or so he would have us believe.

well gosh, he's shown so much backbone since taking the gavel that i'm sure the crackpot caucus was duly impressed with his show of resolve.

it would be hilarious if he was booted out. maybe backbench matt gaetz fancies himself as speaker.

He's definitely scared. He keeps capitulating to his own side, after all. The person who leaked this was probably McCarthy himself.

will be polishing their…um…shoes soon enough. He’s certainly done it before:

McCarthy opposed impeachment, but said: “That doesn’t mean the president is free from fault. … The president bears responsibility for Wednesday’s attack on Congress by mob rioters. He should have immediately denounced the mob when he saw what was unfolding. These facts require immediate action by President Trump to accept his share of responsibility, quell the brewing unrest and ensure President-elect Biden is able to successfully begin his term.”
McCarthy said he supported a censure resolution against Trump instead.

what exactly does mr. amorphous believe in? what are his views, other than appeasing the crackpot caucus so he can retain the speakership?

This isn't true. McCarthy is desperately scared of these people and they know it. He has abased himself before them before and will again. He just got done abasing himself before telling them he wasn't scared of them.

    "... at a closed-door meeting .."

    This makes totally uninteresting.
If he does thatin public, that will be interesting, but that the fact he said it in closed-door doesn't suggest that he will say it in public.

Actually, for a couple of weeks he need not fear removal, because that would guarantee a shutdown while the Stupid Party(TM) went through a few hundred ballots to try to elect a successor. So if a motion to vacate is put on the floor, I’m betting just enough Democrats will vote for McCarthy to allow him to stay; because it is the Right Thing To Do for constituents. I suppose all the Democrats will first vote for Rep. Jeffries, then the minimum number will change their votes.
Of course, it would be a far better thing for the country if enough Republicans would vote for Jeffries to put him in the Speaker’s seat. I expect the number of Republicans willing to put country ahead of self and party will be zero.

House Dems need to tell House Republicans to go fuck themselves. Jeffries or nobody. You don't win against bullies by capitulating to them, and it's fairly obvious who is shutting down the government / impeaching Biden and who isn't. Make the GOP own both with the voters who (outside the feverish right wing) aren't keen on either happening.

Yeah, and as a counterpoint, I'm inclined to reward Dems who are able to prevent a government shutdown. I mean, I'm all for ensuring that blame falls where blame is due (and here it's certainly on the republicans who are just itching to wreck the government and variously inconvenience and immiserate millions), but a government shutdown is a *bad* thing, and so I'd prefer if it didn't happen.

The Democrats certainly should do that, and really should have done that at the beginning of the session. That would have created a chasm in the Republican party between McCarthy and supporters on one side and Trump and the extreme cranks on the other side. It would certainly wouldn't have made Republicans look any better.
