Raw Data: Worldwide COVID-19 Cases Increased Last Week

Here's the latest from WHO:

The global number of new coronavirus cases rose for the first time in nearly two months, the World Health Organization said Monday....Cases over the past week jumped in every region except for Africa and the Western Pacific, the U.N. agency said.

Naturally this got me curious:

Sure enough, if you look at the period from February 22-28, daily cases worldwide have gone up by about 14,000. That's an increase of just over 3%. Not the biggest change, but definitely a move in the wrong direction.

So keep masking up and staying at home as much as possible, folks. We aren't out of the woods yet.

In the US at least, I wonder how much the bump was due to Superbowl parties. That was on 2/7. Figure people who got infected start feeling crummy about a week or so later (2/10-20, say), get tested the week of 2/20, and...yup, there's your uptick in infections. Look for another jump around the end of March when the St. Patrick's day cases start turning up...

Backlogs. Total cases are making new lows. I really don't think cases matter much now anyways. Its about hospitalizations. Many cities/townships barely have any Covid patients now.

Declining hospitalizations are of course good news, but the problem with a continuing high rate of spread is that there are more chances for the virus to mutate, which spells trouble down the road.

Mutate weaker??? The more it infects, the more it dies. The more new strains become even more irrelevant. This is a old persons disease, much like 1957-58. Its ok to move on.

Wow, I'm in awe of your clear expertise in infectious disease medicine.

Do you have some basis for saying that? I have no medical expertise but everything that I've suggests that mutations are random with an equal chance that a new variant will be both more virulent and unaffected by the current vaccine. This suggests that it is imperative to bring the number of new cases to as close to zero, as quickly as possible.

Also, the new evidence suggests that while young people may be somewhat less susceptible to the virus, they have a roughly equal chance of having a severe case of Covid-19 with long term debilitating effects. Again, suggesting that we need to intensify suppression efforts.

You seem to be suggesting otherwise.

What ends ends. Historically, these sickness's don't end to they burn out through the population. Its just nature. If you don't like it, live in your little bubble. Then we wonder why the left is clamoring for social nationalism to take over and leave the Proggies in the dust.

This may be unintentional but feels like a joke. A post about a recent increase in Covid cases and a message to "keep masking up and staying at home," with a link to a WaPo story whose headline reads "Texas ends mask requirement, the largest state to do so, at critical moment in pandemic."

Btw, I don't see an uptick in the chart above, though you can see one in the data from Texas here:
    https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/usa/texas/

The uptick is in the area below the curve for the last seven days, compared to the areas under preceding weeks.

And on cue the dumbass Texas Gov does not disappoint
    Another genius...

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott lifts COVID-19 mask mandate, allows businesses to open at 100%

Some would say the Biden Boom in Corona infections & deaths has been the full length of the pandemic, given the Obama-Biden regime left the cupboard bare of medical equipment & was too weak on China to ensure the People's Liberation Army wouldn't stage a biowarfare episode under cover of wetmarkets.

  5. ProgressOne

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott today lifted the state mandate for wearing masks. And the state now allows businesses to operate at 100%. Abbott said, “state mandates are no longer needed.”

Whew, glad to know this covid thing is all over.

But seriously, if I start going to the grocery store and many people stop wearing masks, I'm going to be really pissed. I am betting many Trumpsters will not wear masks now as a matter of defiance.

Sure get the feeling a lot of GOP politicians want to appear more Trump-like. Abbott is up for re-election in less than 2 years. He sure won't get my vote.

It is very suspicious that the Europe and North America plot lines are closely tracking over this time period. Europe up, North America up one day, both down the next. Seems like there are data collection artifacts from WHO.

    1. Jerry O'Brien

Sorry, I shouldn't blame WHO for the plotted data. The source is Our World in Data, and I don't know where they got it.

I should also admit, most of the correlation comes from the weekly cycle, which is probably similar in Europe and North America.
