Republicans need to figure out a way to fund their giant tax cut for the rich, and in a huge surprise their answer turns out to be benefit cuts for the poor. But check out how they're trying to frame it:

lololol. In plain English they want to:

  • Cut Medicare payments to hospitals for indigent care.
  • Cap Medicaid outlays based on state population.
  • Cut the federal copay for Medicaid.
  • Add a work requirement to Medicaid.
  • Reduce Medicaid payments for everyone to the current lowest level.
  • Get rid of the middle-class subsidy increase for Obamacare.
  • Cut food stamps.
  • Cut food stamps even more by "reforming" the calculated cost of feeding a family.
  • Cut TANF—which has already declined by 47%—by 10% more.
  • Kill anything with "green" in its name.
  • Cut emergency spending, presumably by pretending climate change has had no effect on the weather.

The Medicaid proposals alone would cut roughly $270 billion per year. That would reduce current federal Medicaid spending by nearly half.

    Practical question they seem never to consider:

    If they drive off all the undocumented workers, and kill off all the poor citizens, who the hell is gonna do all the grunt work that keeps this country going?

      My bet is on prisoners for the really low end jobs that require no specialized skills and people on very restrictive visas for the slightly higher skilled jobs, visas that 2 centuries ago would’ve been called “indentured servitude.” As cephalopod says, we can always make new prisoners, especially if things like “said something bad about Dear Leader” or “was registered as a Democrat” become felonies. And until America is fully degraded, it still will be attractive to people in the developing world to come here, even if on 25+ year contracts with no rights.

          Joking, but correct.

          Previously, the monarch ruled by divine right and was actually the head of the Church in England. This God power was given by them to aristocrats and on down to the father of each family. Each one the divinely appointed ruler of their domain.

          The Constitution established rule by the people. Power from each individual who allow it to be loaned to those in charge (who they picked) for practical purposes.

          This is why MAGAs will point out that this isn't a democracy but is a republic, even though that means that individuals are citizens, not subjects. But of course only Real Americans, not those other people.

      Some kids will not listen to adults who know better, and just have to touch the hot stove to learn it burns. And apparently America has tens of millions of children aged 18 and over who need to learn how to vote responsibly.

        I don’t disagree. It seems like the only way they will wake up is to experience harsh consequences. Unfortunately those “children” may well burn down the house with the rest of us in it. I keep thinking about how it took destoyring their country for most Germans to finally wake up. Now a growing number of them want to return to those days.

      Deep red West Virginia will be badly damaged by these policies because its population is not only one of the poorest but also one of the oldest — and they are white! Once again Trump is punishing his base for voting for him.
      I expect some loud protests from WVa governor, now Senator Jim Justice. He is no shrinking violet or extremist nut. In fact he was a very public, very vocal proponent of the Covid vaccine and had a very early, aggressive program for getting it out. This video of him excoriating the covid conspiracies and more is epic.

    This is what middle and working class people voted for, or couldn’t be bothered to show up to vote against.

    They deserve to get what they explicitly or implicitly wanted, good and hard.

      It's the working class that has abandoned the Democratic Party, and who voted this Orange lying sack of shit into office twice, along with the MAGA majorities to help implement this fuck over of the poor and working class to fund continuing tax breaks for the wealthy and corporations. Orange Jesus promised in 2016 to bring back manufacturing from overseas, and the morons who voted from him still believe it. - ANY TAX CUTS FOR TIPS PROMISE BY AGENT ORANGE?

      So all I can say is it's too fucking bad if you voted for MAGA and get screwed. Hopefully the MAGA Congressional members in NY and CA purple districts can extract some SALT cap concessions they promised, though it would likely be structured so that middle class taxpayers are indifferent between taking the Standard Deductions vs Itemized, but of course wealthy folks paying a whole lot more local taxes would benefit.

      I don't think Co-President Elect Musk would agree to reduced EV charger station benefits or EV subsidies (assuming Tesla sales are still eligible to receive subsidies).

      Through much of US history, middle and lower class whites have actively opposed programs and structures that would benefit them because denying and punishing the undeserving, lower social class "others" was more important.

    I submit it's more like "tax cuts (mostly miniscule) for Nice White People paid for by Others."

    For most MAGAts it's not about economics; it's about status wrapped in a heavily race-tinged morality fable.

    And I'd add that, after reductions in services and necessary increases in state and local taxes, most White people who aren't very-comfortable-to-wealthy will see a net COST. (Not that they'll ever admit it of course...)

    It seems reasonable to slash Medicaid by 50% given the critical role to be played by RFK, Jr: If America is going to be twice as healthy, it only seems reasonable to reduce healthcare expenditures commensurately.

    And the “disabled” drug addicts in Kentucky and West Virginia get cut off, too.
