Here's an interesting poll from NPR/Marist:
The topline numbers don't mean much at this point, but what's interesting is that when the pollsters added RFK Jr. to the mix he took nine points from Trump and only five points from Biden. Apparently both Trump and RFK Jr. appeal to the folks who want to set the world on fire.
Not shocked since my D’s have a brain- RFK Jr excepted.
"Apparently both Trump and RFK Jr. appeal to the folks who want to set the world on fire."
That's an unhelpful phrasing.
They both appeal to people who feel that the world created by "elites" (artificially complex, and demanding permission and certification to do anything) is set up against them, and they naturally oppose this world and those who seek to defend it.
They are essentially the Protestants to the orthodoxy of the Catholic Church. With all that implies both in terms of "freedom" and in terms of "freedom to be chaotic and believe lunatic things".
But it takes two sides to creates a 30 yrs War. The REAL fight is not about sides, it is about principles. We kinda sorta learned that in 1648 - but most are now determined to forget it.
Opposing "the elites" doesn't explain why would anybody support a piece of shit like Trump.
Interesting how a Kennedy isn't considered an elite
+1
For that matter, how does trump's bragging about his wealth & success - not to mention his supposed description of the White House as being a dump- make him any less of an elitist than a Kennedy with a poor personal record?
...or a Catholic, even metaphorically.
Wait to miss the point:

Trump has no principles and is only about loyalty, so I'm not sure where you're getting that this is not about sides.
If all third party candidates get a combined 16% I will eat my hat. The one made of paper mache, sure, but still it ain't gonna happen.
Democrats who would vote for RFK, jr are probably not people who do much voting anyway.
Yes. In every social media post by RFK there are hardcore MAGAts who are drooling over him. I don't see that from progressives
"The topline numbers don't mean much at this point..."
But Kevin, you had to say that. You were predetermined to say that. Why should I take your statement to have any truth value at all?
Now me, I believe in a degree of free will. What I say might be might be right or wrong. And the only way we might find out which one it is, is for some agent who DOES have free will to make that judgement. Absent at least one such agent, then nothing is true or false, just predetermined.
Love your handle, but this makes no sense:
>But Kevin, you had to say that. You were predetermined to say that. Why should I take your statement to have any truth value at all?
Just because our brains follow the laws of physics doesn't have any bearing at all on whether what our brains think is "true" or not.
I understand that, like the religious, most people can't bear the thought of no free will. But all the arguments (like this) are just wishful thinking / gobble-d-gook.
Mainstream media must be really bummed out by this poll. Not only is Biden ahead in the head-to-head, but RFKJr is pulling from Trump preferentially so they can't even type up a "Dems in disarray" thumbsucker.
Amen to that. The only party in disarray right now is the GOP, at least in Congress,
The Trump attacks on RFJ Jr for being a Democrat-plant and spoiler should come any time now.
i don't buy this at all. it's people responding to a pollster trying to express disatisfaction with bden and trump, but very few would actually vote for RFK, certainly no 16%. perot got 8% and was running a legitimate, pretty well funded campaign and actually participated in the first general election debate. RFK won't even be on the ballot in most states.
I guess with the extremely tight margins in swing states RFK could matter, but I don't think this poll really tells us anything about how it will actually play out in the real world.
Sixteen percent for RFK2?
That's dispiriting.
Electoral-vote.com had an item on this today. They looked at four polls -- including this one -- that polled the race with/without RFK Jr., and noted that on average across all four, the RFK Jr. effect was... exactly 0. And that's before you even take into account that polls 13 months out are effectively meaningless.

"Apparently both Trump and RFK Jr. appeal to the folks who want to set the world on fire."
Imagine that.
