Rishi Sunak is sort of mildly well off

Rishi Sunak, the new prime minister of Great Britain, apparently gets a lot of flak for marrying into great wealth:

Sunak, a former banker, and his wife, Indian tech heiress Akshata Murty, have an estimated fortune of about 730 million pounds ($830 million), according to the Sunday Times Rich List. On this year’s list, published before her death, Queen Elizabeth II was estimated to have about 370 million pounds ($420 million) by comparison.

....Sunak’s critics have sought to play up his privileged upbringing. They point out that he attended the 600-year-old Winchester College, where annual fees for those who board, like he did, today exceed $52,000.

$830 million? With an m? That's chump change. They can't possibly be getting worked up about supposed "wealth" that doesn't even reach ten figures, can they?

As for Winchester College, is that another joke? Hell, we probably have community colleges here in America that charge that much. Any university worth attending will charge 50 or 60 grand just in tuition.

The British used to understand wealth, but no longer. What a sad downfall for a once great nation.

Yes, it's steep. But far from unheard of here in the USA. Winchester is one of the top prep schools in England, comparable to Exeter and Andover here. And if you care to be impressed, check their distinguished alumni list (you can see it in Wikipedia). Andover and Exeter have impressive lists too, but Winchester's goes back over 800 years!

The Nigel Brexit wing of the Trump Cult is not amused that the British Deep State forced Boris out and replaced him with a Brown.

I've seen 12,000 dollars worth of outlays for one season of play in midget hockey leagues for one midget. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot

Look how they just rejected supply side economics so her they got her to quit, just crazy when you look at McCarthy getting ready to go at it here again.

It's all been going down since at least before Jimmy Carr got in trouble for tax evas.... avoidance. The sun has truly set on that empire.

Haven't I read only about a zillion articles saying the meaning of Brexit was: STOP the immigrants? Does the UK have no guys in diners who can complain about this?

Sure seems like Mitt Romney has some staying power, at least in their system.

"His backers, however, say it is precisely his background as chancellor and the years spent making money that qualify him..."

He was a hedge-fund manager. So if you think the country should be run for the benefit of hedge funds and other financial manipulators, he is the right choice (as was Mitt Romney).

Kevin, of course it’s a lot. Anything more than two farthings in one’s pocket after paying for a cuppa is considered excess wealth.

Tell you me you don't really understand Britain without telling me.

Winchester is a private *K-12* school like Exeter or Philips Andover. It's a completely different thing than an American college and is a sign of being very upper class indeed.

"Any university worth attending will charge 50 or 60 grand just in tuition." The number 2 and 4 electrical engineering programs (Berkeley and UIUC) charge 42k and 38k for in state tuition.. Not sure you can still survive in Urbana IL for less than 12k for 9 months.
