If I had to guess, OpenAI the not for profit wanted him gone and OpenAI the consumer facing company that Microsoft has invested $10B in has a differing opinion. As I understand it they have no vote in the matter though due to the way the entities are structured. This could get interesting.
He'll be back as an improved simulation.
