They won’t have George Soros to kick around anymore

At age 92, he's stepping down:

George Soros, the legendary investor, philanthropist and right-wing target, is handing control of his $25 billion empire to a younger son—Alexander Soros, a self-described center-left thinker who grew up self-conscious of the family’s wealth and wasn’t thought to be a potential successor.

The 37-year-old, who goes by Alex, said in the first interview since his selection that he was broadening his father’s liberal aims—“We think alike,” the elder Soros said—while embracing some different causes. Those include voting and abortion rights, as well as gender equity. He plans to continue using the family’s deep pockets to back left-leaning U.S. politicians.

Of course, dog-whistling conservatives can still just say "Soros backed" and no one will know the difference. But Alex is a Bill Maher fan who's perhaps a bit more centrist than his father:

Alex is more focused on domestic politics than his father, he said. Alex is helping Democrats appeal to Latino voters and improve turnout among Black voters. He has urged Democratic politicians to better hone their message, broadening the party’s appeal. “Our side has to be better about being more patriotic and inclusive,” he said. “Just because someone votes Trump doesn’t mean they’re lost or racist.”

So more money for US politics but possibly a modestly different focus. It sounds like everything is in good hands.

Sins of the Father passed on to the son, Alex surely will have the pleasure of inheriting the bogeyman status

    OT:
Are you keeping up with the latest reporting re the origins of COVID-19? That story is locked behind an impenetrable paywall, but the Daily Mail has a summary. From the Daily Mail's summary:

... in 2016 when researchers from the Wuhan institute discovered a new coronavirus in a mineshaft in Mojiang, Yunnan, near China's border with Laos.

The coronavirus that was discovered in the Mojiang mineshaft is understood to be the only member of Covid-19's immediate family to have existed prior to the pandemic.

Chinese authorities, however, failed to report fatalities linked to the new coronavirus that was discovered in the Mojiang mineshaft.

Instead, the mineshaft viruses were taken back to the Wuhan Institute of Virology where researchers launched a classified research programme, investigators say.

This is tantalizing for a couple of reasons. First, this is the same area where RaTG13, the nearest (publicly) known relative to SARS-CoV-2 is from. Second, if the claim -- "the only member of Covid-19's immediate family -- is accurately recounted by journalists, then, this artful term implies that this was of the same lineage as SARS-CoV-2. If true, this could be the smoking gun. I have my doubts, though. Journalists aren't exactly good at understanding what they're being told, and often accidentally introduce imprecise language.

The problem with the "lab leak" theory is that it can be many things and the conveyors of it tend to conflate viruses produced in the lab with viruses that may have been picked up from the field. Or even with someone infected with Covid or its precursor visiting the institute.
If the animals in the wet market were from that area, and if there was a lot a travel between Wuhan and that region, then having the institute take samples from the mine would not have made a difference--just a few more people among thousands.
It could be that it was people from (or going to) the Wuhan Institute picked up an infection when visiting the mine area, visited the wet market while in Wuhan where the virus jumped to an animal (say, racoon dog), which lead to formation of the Covid virus. Here's the thing, if researchers are studying an outbreak, they'll take some precautions when getting samples--even if they're expecting it to be a known version of the flu. People living in the outbreak area wouldn't realize it's any different than the flu.
This news is important--they have a contender for the precursor virus. Bureaucrats in CYA mode means hiding information--and that has caused a lot of problems.

      That's very interesting.

If true, that could help settle the great debate between the natural zoonotic theory and the lab leak theory. They were both right! (Or both wrong, depending on how you want to look at it.)

“Just because someone votes Trump doesn’t mean they’re lost or racist.”

    It means exactly that.

Next year he'll be voting for No Labels.

I would give him that perhaps back in 2016. Even Hillary conceded that only maybe half of Trump's supporters were a "basket of deplorables." But if you're still a Trump voter in 2023. *Especially* if you're still a Trump voter after the indictment the other day, yeah, you're pretty much just here for the racism, fascism, and violence.

I know Trump supporters who are definitely not racist. I think it’s a mistake to say they all are. It reminds me of MAGA people saying all people on the left are secretly out to destroy the country. They really believe this.

As for "lost", I'd say anyone who walks into a voting booth and votes for Trump is lost in terms of their political thinking. They have been duped by a mega-narcissist who is a shameless liar. Trump has convinced millions of people that our major institutions are corrupt and that the MSM, experts, and fact checkers should all be ignored. Just look to Trump for the underlying real truth.

      1. cld

Well, I believe all Trump supporters are quite openly out to destroy the country, and for none of them is it really any kind of alliance of convenience, because no one would get that far down the rabbit hole without noticing the lights are out.

Uh, yes, they are lost and racist. You don't accidentally vote for the lying anti-science fascists trying to destroy Democracy and impose Big Government.
