Trump thinks Nikki Haley was in charge of Capitol security on January 6

Um....

Trump is really losing it these days. As in, really losing it.

That’s the headline everywhere (except Fox, which of course ignores the story). The trouble is that the underlying claim is a lie and saying he mistook them is giving truth to the lie.

      1. Bardi

"…saying he mistook them is giving truth to the lie."
        Clever how you noticed that.
Two lies, the first, the distraction, is easily apologized for and constitutes a distraction from the second, more serious lie, that anyone but him is responsible for the insurrection attempt.
I don't think his mental facilities are any different from 2016.

If only his audience cared one whit about these sorts of demonstrations of mental decline……. He’s their guy and they will stick with him until he chokes on a Big Mac, and then they will continue to believe he’s still alive and ruling from behind the scene. Just like so many think he is still President…… our country is going through a grave mental health crisis.

      1. Mitch Guthman

Probably not. But don’t forget that Trump’s spent most, if not all, of his life in the grip of a serious mental illness (malignant narcissism) besides being a psychopath So my guess is that it’s bound to be hard to tell if something’s more wrong with Trump than what’s normal for him.

  2. D_Ohrk_E1

We all know the reason why he's running: He's scared of going to prison.

Conflating/confusing Haley with Pelosi is Trump's subconscious admission that he's scared to hell about Haley beating him, IMO. Same goes for all of his projections of Biden's cognition, the "Biden crimes", and economic/foreign policy weakness.

    1. Bardi

"Conflating/confusing Haley with Pelosi is Trump's subconscious admission that he's scared to hell about Haley beating him…"
Maybe, but I think he is still devious and this was probably not an accident.

Looking at social media, there are some who think Trump said it deliberately, knowing it's likely to be accepted by MAGA*, and that subsequent correction has a small audience. In other words, that he can get away with it.

    * mostly in the hall, not the greater MAGA population.

    1. marknc

Exactly. If there is one thing Trump knows (and really, actually knows) it is that lying works. It doesn't even matter that what you are saying is stupid on its face - say something, anything, to run the other person into the ground.

I don't think Trump's IQ exceeds 100. He's about as average as it gets. But I'm pretty sure he knows Haley had nothing to do with the Capital on 1/6 (unless she was helping in the background). After this gets laughed at, it wouldn't surprise me to see Trump repeat it another 50 times.

And the rubes will hate, hate, hate Haley for letting Antifa attack the US Capital on 1/6.

      1. bbleh

I dunno whether he's even consciously lying. I'd guess it's more like stringing concepts together in a "poetic" way. "Antifa attack America, attack YOU, woman let it happen, bad woman, Nikki Haley bad woman, Nikki Haley Antifa attack America bad, bad!" It's straight from the Id, without any unnecessary processing.

What's kind of depressing is, his followers eat it up. Doesn't say much for their mental abilities either.

        1. Joseph Harbin

...it's more like stringing concepts together in a "poetic" way.

Next time it won't even be Nikki.

          "Nimarata.
          Nimarata Randhawa.
          Nee-more-rat-ta. Rand-how-wah.
Person. Woman. Man. Camera. Nimarata who the fughawa the randhawa."

MAGA crowd will eat it up.

    2. cld

That was my thought, the baboon colony will think Well she probably was, --women --they're all in it together, anyway, that's the real deep state!

    3. kenalovell

I doubt it. If you watch the video, he quite obviously had a brain snap and completely lost track of what he was trying to say. Maybe the teleprompter jammed.

  4. golack

    Scott's endorsement.
    Who will be running mate.
    Horse race in New Hampshire.
    Trump saying crazy things.

This is how oxygen is sucked out of the room

  5. martinmc

And let's keep in mind he also found it necessary to repeat the lie that the Jan 6 Committee destroyed all of the evidence.

  6. Dave_MB32

I think it's clearly conflation. His dementia is advancing and he's decompensatig faster. If you've ever had a family member with dementia, you'll recognize the traits. I think the people saying that it's being done consciously are overestimating his abilities at this point.

  7. Martin Stett

MAGA Man dies and goes to heaven. God greets him and asks if he has any questions. MAGA Man asks how Biden cheated to win the election. God smiles and tells him that Biden won fair and square.

MAGA Man thinks: "The conspiracy goes even higher than I thought!"

    1. Joseph Harbin

Ha. The more wrong someone is, the harder it is to change their mind.

A man who had led Bible study classes in the South was writing about his experiences. Can't remember where I read it, but one story stuck in my mind. One day his group was discussing the parable of the Prodigal Son. A woman in the group became upset that the father doesn't scorn or punish his young son who squanders his inheritance and returns home destitute. The father throws a feast instead. The woman complains: it wasn't the right thing to do according to the Christian religion. "But that's the parable that Jesus tells in the Bible." Woman responds: "Then Jesus was wrong."

My impression is that most Trump supporters still think they are tight with the big guy. The one they have trouble with is his son, JC, the one who blathers on about paying your taxes and turning the other cheek while handing out free health care. Where Evangelicals once viewed JC as the only path to redemption, more and more seem to think Donald Trump is the surer path to knowing what the big guy is really thinking.

  8. SwamiRedux

Jan 6 is what you get when you put an illegal immigrant woman in charge of security at the Capitol. Woke is everywhere!

  9. Heysus

t-Rump may skip jail time the reason of insanity. He’s certainly getting there now. Maybe he’s just playing this because he knows he’s in a corner? Who knows what evil t-Rump is up to.

    1. Yehouda

      " Maybe he’s just playing this ..."

Since he was "playing" like that all of his life, that is the most obvious explanation. And there is no reason to look for other explanations, he just continues to do what he did until now.

  10. zaphod

OK, I watched the attached video. My impression is that Trump was fully in control of his faculties, and it was a deliberate attempt to take down Haley.

I wish I could believe the cognitive decline theory, but the body language tells a different story. It is the Magat's and 1/3 of our population that is in cognitive decline. When will we stop underestimating Trump's skill in lying and manipulation?

Still, it shows that Trump is worried about Haley, and I doubt whether his antics will change many votes, at least in NH.

      1. J. Frank Parnell

"When will we stop underestimating Trump's skill in lying and manipulation?"

I am more impressed the skill of Trump's supporters to be lied to and manipulated, and by the ability of the4 MSM to enable it.

        1. Yehouda

That is not a reason to underestimate Trump's skills of getting them to listen to him and believe him. He does have that skill, and it is a serious problem for the US.

    1. Austin

Presumably when he’s dead, we’ll stop underestimating his skills in lying and manipulation. Unless of course - and I wouldn’t put it past them - one of his children or sycophants convinces a significant portion of the population that they can still communicate with Trump in the afterlife.

    2. J. Frank Parnell

Couldn't disagree more. Trump repeated Haleys name repeatedly, sensing the something was not quite right (like maybe he had the wrong horrible woman). Then as usual with no further thought he plunged ahead.

  11. azumbrunn

He is not losing it. He is doing what he has always done: Tell falsehoods to take down an opponent.
It is his disciples that have lost it, Trump is just doing what he does.

    1. kahner

yup. how many thousands of times over the years do people have to see trump tell absurd lies to his followers and them eat it up before they realize it's just what he does because he knows it works. trump probably is losing whatever mental acuity he had, but stupid nonsensical lies during his stupid nonsensical rallies to his stupid nonsensical base aren't a symptom of his decline.

  12. iamr4man

Looking at the news this morning it looks like the story would just disappear based on it being just another Trumpism. But it looks like Nikki Haley is trying to get some traction out of it so perhaps it will end up biting him a little bit.

  13. Jasper_in_Boston

I'm struck at the commenters on this thread who don't realize this was a cognitive lapse. Folks, habitual liars are subject to age-related dementia, too, especially when they're morbidly obese.

(Side note: why isn't he on Semaglutide? You'd think his vanity alone would guarantee that.)

      1. J. Frank Parnell

I watched the video, and Trump clearly senses something is not quite right when he repeats Haley's name several times, but then just plunges ahead. For Trump delivering the line and getting the applause from his minions is the prime directive, getting right is totally irrelevant.

  14. zaphod

Well, at least some Republicans are up to using this against him. Haley used this to argue that Trump is too old to be president.

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2024/01/20/nikki-haley-trump-mental-fitness/

"Former U.N. ambassador Nikki Haley on Saturday aggressively questioned former president Donald Trump’s mental fitness, seizing on a flub at a rally in which Trump repeatedly called Nancy Pelosi by Haley’s name when attacking the former House speaker.

“You know, my parents are up in age, and I love them dearly,” she said when asked directly if Trump, 77, is mentally fit to be president. “But when you see them hit a certain age, there is a decline. That’s a fact, ask any doctor, there is a decline. And this is a situation where our country is very vulnerable right now.”

Haley also noted that Trump erroneously referred to running against former president Barack Obama and implored the audience not to “put our country at risk like this.”

"New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu (R), a top supporter of former U.N. ambassador Nikki Haley, also raised questions Saturday about Trump’s mental fitness.

“Donald Trump can barely keep a cogent thought if he takes his eyes off a teleprompter, very similar to Joe Biden," Sununu told reporters.

I must admit, I enjoy seeing even a little bit of democratic behavior and fight, even if only in the R Party. I search in vain for Democratic officials behaving in a similar fashion. Evidently, anything that Joe Biden says or does is political law.

    1. Yehouda

"I must admit, I enjoy seeing even a little bit of democratic behavior and fight,.."

Trump is a wannabe dictator, who wants to abolish democracy and the constitution, and use the army to suppress the population. Talking about his age is totally ignoring the main issues.

What Biden says is not a "political law", but currently he is the president, and he is the best candidate Democrats can come up with, and Democrats behave accordingly.

      1. zaphod

he is the best candidate Democrats can come up with

in your opinion. which is OK, because this is (supposed to be) a democracy.

But is he? There was never a serious search for alternatives, because Biden said he wanted it, and nobody objected. Biden's wish was "political law" for the upper echalon of the Democratic Party. Some states have decreed that nobody will be allowed to run against Biden. How is this different than the Republicans?

I hope that, if he makes it that far, Biden will win. I am a strong proponent of voting for the lesser evil. Despite my wishes, I think it more than likely he will lose, largely because of the sham democratic processes of the Democratic Party.

One exception to this rule: Dean Phillips.

        1. KenSchulz

IMHO, there are a number of Democrats who could be good Presidents, but none have the advantages of 1) incumbency, and 2) name recognition that President Biden has. And no one has chosen to challenge the incumbent except Dean Phillips, who is going nowhere.

        2. J. Frank Parnell

There is a strong tradition of letting a sitting president run for a second term. There is no tradition of letting a loser run again. Biden's candidacy is the norm, Trump's is exceptional (and not in a good way).

      2. zaphod

Talking about his age is totally ignoring the main issues.

If a candidate is not able to win, his stance on the issues doesn't matter at all. Polls indicate that age is a main concern that voters have about Biden. It does not matter if their concern is based on rational considerations or emotional reactions. It doesn't seem fair to us rational people. But such is the case. Biden is very likely unelectable.

        1. illilillili

However, it is rational to consider age in a candidate, and age has no effect on electability for this election (unless Haley somehow pulls out a victory over Trump).

  15. illilillili

Trump's behavior hasn't changed. How is a lack of change in behavior evidence of a change in mental state? Trump has consistently lied and consistently blamed opponents for bad stuff without evidence.

    1. J. Frank Parnell

His lying is getting more extreme and sloppy. Trump has always been a grifter and a shyster, but now he is becoming a senile grifter and shyster.
