Trump wants a CLEAN spending bill except for almost everything in it

After Elon Musk had already coordinated a Republican revolt against the CR, Donald Trump jumped in to take credit:

Republicans want to support our farmers, pay for disaster relief, and set our country up for success in 2025. The only way to do that is with a temporary funding bill WITHOUT DEMOCRAT GIVEAWAYS combined with an increase in the debt ceiling. Anything else is a betrayal of our country.

Hmmm. I wonder if Trump even realizes that farm aid and hurricane relief account for about 95% of the extra money in the bill? That's practically all there is to it.

Of course, I've also often wondered if Republicans realize they could probably cut spending by just negotiating a budget with a few concessions instead of delaying endlessly and allowing automatic increases to take effect? I dunno. They're all kind of crazy.

I'm sure the Freedumb circus would be happy, but hardly anyone else. Has a shutdown ever accomplish anything besides causing economic harm? You are a tiresome defeatist.

It's actually an attack, I think. The people voted for republicans and so they should get all the republican dysfunction that comes with that vote. It's not to our advantage to bail them out.

No, it's not an attack--Biden is still the fucking president. A shutdown now will get resolved after Trump is inaugurated, and thus (a) causes misery now and (b) gives Trump a victory later.

      Agreed.

Democrats should allow the Republicans to fucking hang themselves.

      But...but...bad things?!?

Time for Republican voters to get the economy THEY KEEP FUCKING VOTING FOR.

Jesus Christ already. How much longer are Democrats going to position themselves into Pyrrhic victories? Republican voters are insulated by their dipshittery because of Democrats. It's exhausting.

The “economy” will be just fine. All those interest rate changes and inflation didn’t stop growth and full employment. Neither will this. Heck, it will probably help with inflation. Fear not!

They don't really care about governing. They care about getting favorable coverage from Fox, Newsmax, OAN, etc. Those outlets in turn care about catering to their viewers prejudices including their belief that everything the government spends money on is wasted money. Of course, not the money that is spent on them, it is those "other" people that are feeding at the trough.

A big NO on dealing with the debt ceiling before the end of the current Congress. Democrats can use the filibuster to get huge concessions on spending cuts from republicans next year.

    1. Batchman

Trump says lifting the debt ceiling will be "on" Democrats if it's done now. That is absurd, since everyone will know it was done because Trump asked for it.

On the one hand, as other comments indicate, Musk is already writing the Democratic attack ads against Trump and Republicans: Trump is a puppet, Musk actually runs the show (and he runs it into the ground), Republicans are the ones shutting down the government at Christmas time, and who knows what else ...

As best as I can recall, Trump and the Repubs did not mess up anything too spectacularly when they controlled the Federal government from 2016-2018. They TRIED to repeal Obamacare but were saved from themselves (even though their attempt was still effectively used against them).

But, on the other hand, if Trump is seriously going to allow Musk to blatantly dictate policy like this, all bets are off. Not sure I've ever really seen anything like that. Some genuine damage may very well be inflicted.

And of course it'll be up to the Dems to use that to their advantage in 2026. Let's hope they can find some spokespeople who, unlike Harris, do not have a history of distracting (if not disqualifying) and idiotic statements about banning fracking and paying for trans surgeries!

Trump is absolutely going to allow Musk to dictate policy..right up until the VERY public firing of the richest man in the world.

Elon will make for a convenient scape goat. Trump doesn't have to think, as usual, and will escape accountability, as usual.

They don't actually care about cutting spending, though. Not really. They may make a lot of noise about it, but cutting spending is just a means to an end: more tax cuts.

Time for Democrats to stop protecting Republicans from themselves. Tell Johnson there won't be a single Democratic vote for any bill except the one they just negotiated in good faith. If the Republican majority can't get its act together, that's their problem.

And make it clear there won't be any negotiations at all in the next term.

yes Trump is a narcissist, sees something shiny, says something stupid and then doesn't back down. but on the other hand what a stupid way of funding the government. any rational person looking at these continuing resolutions should say that's craaaaaaazy, that's gotta go.

this is just going to keep happening. the government really is pretty fucked up in a lot of ways and so you can't honestly say the Narcissist in Chief (or his crew of assistant narcissists) he's 100% wrong when he points that out, even if what he's pointing at isn't the part that's wrong.

eg I find it credible that the military has too many generals, it's it's true beyond any reasonable doubt that they waste fantastic amounts of money in the military. and so on of course in the next breath our narcissist leaders will come up with a perfectly ridiculous solution that makes things worse; but they're occasionally going to be right about what the problem is

    we are cursed

I'm against a government shutdown. Having said that, in just over one month Republicans will have full control over federal government. Democrats should have just ONE rule for any CR: No changes to laws other than budgetary adjustments.

That's an easy, simple narrative to tell the American public: "We don't have shared solutions to this nation's problems. We are willing to adjust funding to let the government continue to operate until which time they have full control of the federal government. At that point, they can take responsibility for their values and solutions."

    1. Batchman

"No changes to laws other than budgetary adjustments." That's effectively going to be the case due to the filibuster. And Democrats who want(ed) to abolish the filibuster are fools hoping to shoot themselves in the foot.

The Dems need someone who dishes out back at Trump on social media as hard as Trump goes after them. They'll get nowhere without a larger than life social media nemesis to Trump. I nominate AOC, but there's probably someone better out there I'm not thinking of.
