Vaccination Update

Marian got the call for her COVID-19 vaccination a couple of days ago, so this morning we headed off to Soka University to get her jabbed. The line to get in looks long...

I took this picture out the car window just before a security guard told me not to.

...but it wasn't. In fact, the whole thing was extraordinarily efficient. There were about a million traffic folks guiding the cars around and it took only ten minutes or so for us to get from the start of the line to the parking structure. Check-in took another ten minutes and then maybe another ten to get the shot. Then there's a 15-minute wait to make sure you don't have a severe reaction and that was it. The whole thing took less than an hour from start to finish.

The folks there said they gave 3,500 shots yesterday, the most ever. Obviously this is just one site, but if it's at all representative then it sure looks like California is starting to get its vaccination act together.

Same here in Massachusetts. My wife got her first shot at Fenway Park Tuesday and it was equally smooth.

The state's website says 950.000 shots were given yesterday statewide.

    Pretty good.

I think you must have an extra zero in that number. Hard to believe your state vaccinated 1/6th of its population in one day.

Were she able to make her second appointment while there? My sister who lives in LA wasn’t allowed to do so and was told to make it inline after 3 weeks passed. I live in Northern California and had my shot at the UCSF Medical Center. It was very efficient and I was able to book my second shot appointment while there.

This was very similar to my experience at Moscone Convention Center in San Francisco. There is a mass vaccination site set up on the main floor, with 48 cubicles for giving the vaccination. The injection itself took barely 10 minutes. The whole operation is very well organized and efficient. The site I used to set this up scheduled the second appointment automatically as well.

    Nationally, we're about 10% (first injection, 8.1 to 12.4 w/ Alaska >15%)
Apparently larger metro areas get their allotment from the feds directly, separate from the state.
Everywhere is hitting up against the supply shortages. But it seems local administrators are getting better info, making scheduling easier. Now there are still those trying to skip the line, as it were, which really eats up people's time.
Yes, there needs to be a better way to register for shots. Mine will be through work, so I'll get an e-mail when I can sign up, so I'm lucky. But for the general public, it still can be a mess.

My parents in Virginia are getting shot #2 on Saturday. My siblings who are high risk but under 65 still waiting, my sibling in VA on a wait list with no idea when her category will be allowed to make an appointment. A ton of frustrations locally as it's hard to get appointment slots in Virginia, Maryland and DC.

And Fouchi is saying everyone could get a shot by April. I'm losing hope about that promise, we seem to have hard limits on how many doses are manufactured each week.

Got my first shot through the health department on January 26th and received an email yesterday saying time to schedule my second shot. I logged on immediately, followed the link in the email, went through six pages of questions (the exact same ones I answered in order to get my first shot) and when I came to the appointment page there were no appointments available. I sent an email saying basically WTF? and received an auto response saying I should get my second shot 21 days after my first one. The system is not perfect in my SoCal town.

Happy ending: On a whim I followed the same link the next evening. This time appointments were available, and I made one, and I'm getting my second shot exactly three weeks after my first one. Yay for the Long Beach Department of Health!

I was also vaccinated at Soka University this week. It was incredibly
well organized and the workers were cheerful and helpful. Due to health issues, I was directed to the drive through section and after getting my injection, was under the observation of a nurse for 30 minutes--yet I was on my way home in less than an hour and 15 minutes. Their system automatically schedules the 2nd injection and provides notification as the date approaches. The process was flawless!!! Kudos to all the people who worked so hard to make this an exceptional event.

I got my first shot at the hospital here in town on Wednesday. I was in and out in about an hour and they just handed me my follow-up appointment for 3 weeks to the minute in the future.

BTW, side effects were minimal for me. Minor fever for a few hours, some fatigue the next day and injection site reaction. I expect the second shot to be a rougher ride.
