The Wall Street Journal says that pay hikes are coming soon:
If inflation turns around, this will mean nice pay increases for workers. However, if it instead feeds into an inflationary spiral, it will do little except force the Fed to take strong action. That wouldn't be good for anyone.
My money is on the former. Assuming that these raises actually materialize, they're just making up for sluggish pay increases this year. I continue to see little to worry about on the medium-term inflation front.
If history is any guide, the "fat raises" will go to the white collar folks in the head offices, the "makers", and not to those drones on the assembly lines, at the cash registers, behind the wheel, going out on service calls, etc. You know, the "takers."
Not true at my company.
We are in construction trades. We do labor-intensive work, including demolition and hazardous materials abatement--asbestos, lead paint, and mold. We have been well-managed during the two years of Covid, and our field supervisors and workers have been industrious, focused, and highly efficient. We have had some nice raises for our hourly workers this year, and I anticipate continuation of that trend, as well as some nice year-end bonuses.
Not every entrepreneur is a greedy Scrooge.
My own experience is that entrepreneurs can be more generous & ethical than some of the VERY large companies.
Yes, I've also found that to be true. I suspect it's because entrepreneurs are most closely connected to their employees, and not to a Board of Directors representing large numbers of faceless stockholders.
In particular, successful entrepreneurs never forget that their success is the product of employees working together with management towards goals that will enrich them all. Things like employee retention, training, efficiency, productivity...those are well recognized to be the foundation of profits.
Owners without MBA's.
Not certain that pertains in my own work experience, but I'd bet that it's true in all cases of companies with stockholders.
And what is WRONG w WordPress? I hadn't logged out, but received a notification of your response due only to having the app now, tried to respond, received notification that I had to log in to reply so pressed the "log in" button but didn't have to actually log in! Really cannot imagine anything worse than WordPress on either this site or friend's blog.
Monkey's Paw corals.
As opposed to fingers on the monkey's paw curls??
NEW YORK, Dec 7 (Reuters) - U.S. bank executives on Tuesday raised concerns about the impact of a sustained period of higher inflation, adding to pressure on the Federal Reserve to accelerate plans to slow down the pace of its asset purchases.
I must confess, I don't really understand this "asset purchase" thing. Are there really lots of companies that need to sell bonds to the FED?
And didn't we just learn that the quickest way to boost the economy is to just give lots of money to people without it? Why in the world would we ever do this FED stimulus the same way ever again?
I'm sure I'm just not grasping the concept.
Asset purchases are irrelevant.
We would do it because Congress is a dysfunctional mess. In the abstract, stimulus through fiscal policy is better than stimulus through monetary policy (though I question the need for stimulus at all at the moment). But, if Congress won't pass anything, the Fed can only use the tools that it has, hence bond purchases.
OT: I have used both my WordPress & individual log-in methods, but the "commenys/notifications" section has disappeared. I don't see any option to bring it back, so downloaded the WordPress app - where I did find the comments - but don't find
Inadvertently posted - didn't find how to connect there with Jabberwocking. What am I missing - website w/o comments & notifications & app w/o blog?
There's an app? A WordPress app?
Yes - but it seemed 2 b just for bloggers - & then I saw the comments - & just now received a WordPress push message notifying me of your message! Now I can respond through the app - but the similar process is no longer available on the Jabberwocking website.
IPhone, right?
Nope - a really old Samsung Galaxy!
https://apps.apple.com/us/developer/automattic/id335703883
I know about the WordPress app for Android, but it's for designing, not reading, websites and blogs. Of course I've never tried it, so what do I know? Just what I read from other users in the Play Store. On my phone I just go to the jabberwocking website in Chrome. Works fine, although I don't get notifications. But then I don't want notifications. I'll bet the fact that you have the app installed is screwing up "normal" web use in a browser, especially since you (and all of us) are registered users on this site.
My problem with the lack of comment records on the bar that used 2 b there at the top right was the reason that I found, D/L & installed the app today!
I understood that it's primarily for others - just as all the Q&A & F/B options are connected 2 Jabberwocking, but at least I can now connect the 2 - just weird how it changed. & if Kevin Drum can change the comments to have an edit function, why wouldn't he - does it cost more? Very strange host...
Also, it's odd that the central option at the bottom of this very page is labeled "Reader."
Until you mentioned it just now I never looked at that thing in the top right. Do you mean you click on the little thought bubble and it opens a menu with "All - Unread - Comments - Follows - Likes?" Mostly I can't picture anything you're mentioning (sorry), but I do know there's a free plugin that enables WordPress commenters to edit their comments, with a time limit set by the admin (Mr. Drum). Maybe he just wants to be a writer, and not delve into that messy stuff behind the curtain.
Odd that the log-in must have been there when I first went on Jabberwocking, since I haven't deleted anything UK intentionally - if I seem a bit dim, I swear I don't usually seem dense about learning my way around online! But thanks 4 mentioning that; I'll search.
"Reader?" Now I know we're not seeing the same screen.
It's on the app below where your replies are shown when I click on the push message 2 read ur msg & respond - this is bizarre, having this feature only on the app.
A big part of it makeup from 2020. 2023 should see a drop in salaries.
"Assuming that these raises actually materialize"
I would not bet the farm on this.
Pretend the 2020 psuedo recession never happened.
Rumor has it that the supply chain issue is starting to ease, in part because ports are working through the backlog of ships. It won't all the cleared up by Christmas, but it won't be all that bad either....
There's the potential for a glut of items to hit the shelves next year, so sales may be back on the menu--and inflation will drop.
We'll see....
Steve Bannon mentioned this with link to a Business Insider story:

There's an app? A WordPress app?
This is exasperating; replied to you 2nd time from app, but didn't place it here - replied here 2 self?
Anyway, tried 2 paste link again but failed here, so pls c above (unless you're just spoofing me!).
No spoof, but where did this dupe post of mine come from?
I'm sure I don't know - it's always nice to know that I'm not quite alone in being mystified by WordPress anomalies such as the occasional reply comment posting in the wrong place - even as a new comment. Funny, when my comment seems not to be posting & I think I didn't press hard or long enough & try again, I immediately get a scold notice that it has already been posted. Know others must assume I did something to "lose" the comment bar underneath the avatar pic, but after finding that there are over 59k WP plugins, it's a lost cause finding a solution.
Sorry for verbose response. Maybe I'll restrict my Jabberwocking to the Friday cat blogging!
Haha! Never too verbose for me. I always want to solve the puzzle, often despite having no knowledge of the subject at hand. The "Reader" thing you mentioned before, I finally found it, and I think it has something to do with the wordpress.com universe. They host blogs, and once you have a WordPress user name, they want you to read them. There could be millions of them. But tonight I can't find it (the Reader thing).
While I appreciate a good puzzle, WordPress appears to be a multiverse
of rabbitholes, while Alice had only one to fall down. Should have known when I encountered my first challenge: I was definitely logged in, because the avatar appeared at the upper right of the screen along with the "Howdy, KawSunflower" greeting - but when I attempted to post but couldn't, was informed that I had to be logged in to comment. I have lost this match!
Who gets raises anymore? In my world, the only way to get a raise is to move to a different college. You won't hear the term "salary compression" anywhere except academia.
