Today I have some good news, some bad news, some good news, and some bad news for you.
The good news is that we've reached agreement on a bill that would modestly raise the Child Tax Credit.
The bad news is that—of course—Republicans have only agreed to this if it's offset with yet another tax break for businesses.
The good news is that the tax break isn't really a bad one, so the whole package is pretty good.
This is a GREAT package!
Like, every part of it is good. You never see that. Even when a package is good, it's usually got some eyeroll-inducing stuff too. This is just lots of good ideas packaged together.
Well done @RonWyden and @RepJasonSmith. https://t.co/ZMQWHjKCxA pic.twitter.com/4ZKjr8bXR6— Gary Winslett ???????????? (@GaryWinslett) January 16, 2024
Finally, the bad news is that no one thinks this can pass.
It would be remarkable if it did. But it's nice to see Democrats trying to get something done anyway. And it lets us know what they're lining up if the Dems, miraculously, hold the Senate. I'm going to tell my friends and family with children. It could be a nice counterpoint to the pro-abortion stance we'll be hearing from a lot of them.
Best I can tell, its a bit murky, there is a deal in the Senate. The GOP lead house has not, at least publicly, agreed to anything. Thus, passing this deal seems far from certain....
The GOP has leaders? Coulda fooled me …
No, I think he had it right - he did not say the GOP led house, he said the GOP lead house (as in the element) and that is accurate.
Even if they don't raise it. Moving it back to monthly checks instead of a once a year tax return would be beneficial to a lot of people. As far as I can tell, that is not in the agreement, though.
