It appears the reemergence of Hunter Biden from the whispers of crack-smoke has found where to cast its shadow: on Dea--... Demented Ol' Dad's flagging effort to get the COVID death rate to El Jefe's null figure from early March 2020.

I wonder if Hunty hit the rock in memory of DMX last week.

It's getting near the end of interesting weekly changes in the United States. Michigan is nearing the end of its last surge, and I'm hoping there won't be another major one, for a while at least.

thanks rick_jones...MI has captured the crown from NJ. And NE has people rising from the dead 😉
MI is starting to "win" in total deaths too, beating out NY.
Case wise, NM climbed out of the pool (now >10 new cases/day/100K).
PR and ME still climbing, and OR going up slowly too. NY and VT falling slowly. Everyone else still holding steady or changing slowly. Ten states and NMI below 10 new cases/day/100K; fifteen above 25.

True, MI leads in the what have you done lately category but the have a long, Long, LONG way to go to unseat NJ in cumulative.

Just the last week United States only
Date.......total deaths.............deaths per million (rolling average)
    4/12........562.521....................1710
    4/13........563,440....................1712
    4/14........564,402....................1715
    4/15........566,283....................1718
    4/16........566,215.....................1721
    4/17........566,893....................1723

I can't figure out what happened on 4/16 with total deaths

Continuing my look at post-vaccination trends in case fatality rate. My method is to compare a week's total deaths with the corresponding week of case numbers at a 21-day lag.

    United States, March 31 week's deaths/March 10 week's cases = 1.71%
    United States, April 10 week's deaths/March 20 week's cases = 1.40%
    United States, April 17 week's deaths/March 27 week's cases = 1.22%

    And in the Midwest:

    Illinois, March 31 deaths/March 10 cases = 1.53%
    Illinois, April 10 deaths/March 20 cases = 1.13%
    Illinois, April 17 deaths/March 27 cases = 1.11%

    Michigan, March 31 deaths/March 10 cases = 1.44%
    Michigan, April 10 deaths/March 20 cases = 1.45%
    Michigan, April 17 deaths/March 27 cases = 1.14%

So now something's improving in Michigan, too.

Pretty soon, I hope, the vaccine is going to bring case numbers down far enough that case fatality rate won't be all that important anymore. Right now, though, things are still dangerous for unvaccinated people, especially older ones.
