Friday Cat Blogging – 12 November 2021

I have bad news today. Hopper has been losing weight lately, and we intended to let a vet take a look at her after her tail had healed. We did that on Monday and it turned out that she was much sicker than we knew. Her kidneys were essentially gone, and although IV fluids would make her feel better for a few days, our vet said that her chances of permanently recovering were close to zero.

So we did the necessaries and had her put to sleep. She was only eight years old. The picture below is the last one I took of her, just before my Louisiana vacation.

Awww...I am crushed. At least Hopper is in cat heaven. I am pointing out to you that water is wet, but please keep a close eye on Hilbert, as sometimes the loss of a long-time companion can cause an ostensibly healthy animal to become visibly depressed.

It is a great thing you are a picture guy and have so many great pics of Hopper, so she will live on in pictures and your heart and memory.

Oh Kevin, I'm so terribly sorry. I had to put my own fuzzy face down last month, after 10 years of being together. It isn't easy and I still hear his foot steps and his little cat noises. No one to greet me at the door anymore.
    I feel for your loss.

Oh what sad news. Cats are good at hiding their illnesses until it's too late. We just lost one from our tribe. We found him dead in the hallway early Sunday morning; his heart had probably failed. Years ago, the vet saw an abnormality in his X-ray, which probably was the cause of the sudden demise. Otis was 12 and a half, so I suppose I should be grateful that he survived as long as he did. It does seem like someone is missing from the household-the other cats were unsettled, too.

So sorry that Hopper endured a medical problem this year & then another one was found to present a more difficult decision. She will be remembered for her gracious presence by many of us, not just Hilbert, Marian, & Kevin.

It's agony. I had to have my older cat, 19 years old, euthanized for the same reason a couple months ago. He and I had been through a lot together over those years, and I feel like I've lost a piece of my body.

My other cat, 16 yo, was never friends with him, but her behavior was odd in the month after he died before finally returning to more or less normal.

Makes you wonder if cats have some grasp of the concept of death. Our semi-feral cat Oreo reverted to full feral behavior for a few days after Otis died, running from us, whereas before she welcomed pets and even sat on laps. She was definitely spooked.

Yeah, mine was something like that. In the previous year or two, she'd taken to coming in at night and settling onto the other half of my pillow and soliciting scritches and belly rubs for half an hour or so before decamping to the living room to sleep by herself. Himself stayed on the other side of the room the while. She somehow knew he wasn't going to menace her and chase her as he had until then.

After he died, she stayed away from my room altogether all day, though was affectonate and affable. A month later, she suddenly reappeared in my room and on the pillow and stayed there until after I fell asleep.

I'm sure it all made sense to her, but...

I’m so sorry mr. Drum and so sad. She was my favorite. I’ve had to do this numerous times, and it doesn’t get easier. It’s probably too soon to tell but how is Hilbert reacting?
