Listening in on Republicans

Let's check in on what Republicans are saying these days:

Donald Trump, about 40 times over the course of a single hour: "Except for a Fraudulent Case against me, I had no idea who E. Jean Carroll was. She called her African American Husband an ‘ape,’ and named her Cat ‘Vagina.’ Look at her Tweets, Stories, and the CNN Interview about her. The Judge on the Case is another Highly Partisan Clinton-Appointed Friend. He should have recused himself long ago!"

Trump lawyer Alina Habba on Trump's insurrection case before the Supreme Court: "You know, people like Kavanaugh, who the president fought for, who the president went through hell to get into place, he’ll step up. Those people will step up."

Rep. Troy Nehls (R–Texas), who supports increased border security: "Let me tell you, I’m not willing to do too damn much right now to help a Democrat and to help Joe Biden’s approval rating."

Fox News prime time wit Greg Gutfeld: "It's almost three years to the day since January 6 and Biden is still flapping his toothless gums about it. Probably since it's also the date of his last solid bowel movement."

The Supreme Court on Friday agreed to decide whether former President Donald J. Trump is ineligible for Colorado’s Republican primary ballot because he had engaged in insurrection in his efforts to overturn the 2020 election.

The case, which could alter the course of this year’s presidential election, will be argued on Feb. 8. The court will probably decide it quickly, as the primary season will soon be underway.

I know some folks think we should consider these assholes our fellow citizens and that we owe them some courtesy or a helping hand, but I don’t any longer. (For a long time now) Have at it.

      POW!

He was over the top, out the door, down the street, and around the bend on that one. Shoot, he can't even SEE the bend from where he's at.

People who think Biden should be paying more attention to border security really need to understand this. Anything Biden does will be opposed by Republicans. They don’t really care about border security. They care about retaining it as an issue to club Biden with.

Which is why it can be an effective weapon against the GOP. There are a lot of undecideds (you know, the people who will decide this election) who worry about the border and honestly think the Dems are "too soft." A little posturing in that direction by Biden might sway some of them. And since the GOP is unlikely to allow anything to pass, low risk.

But in the off-chance that it all gets through anyhow, well, I would be good with a deal that included legalizing the DACAs, clearer asylum laws, more immigration judges, and some more funding for border security. So its a win-win for the Dems.

"A little posturing in that direction by Biden might sway some of them."

How do you figure? Posturing is engaging in imaginary outcomes--Biden could "posture" any reasonable thing you like, and Republicans need only posture something more extreme to continue the dynamic whereby low-information/innumerate voters stroke their chins and worry that Dems are soft on some "invasion at the border" nonsense issue. The point is that none of this is actually about real-world policy or the real-world outcomes of that policy--it's about fantasy, and in that realm, the bigger fabulist with less shame always wins.

Hey, we toss out a couple ideas that we can live with. If the GOP says no, well, the undecideds see that we are not unconcerned. And if the GOP says yes, we have a better border policy. Don't be so negative; we are not destined to always lose everything because the GOP is shameless...

I, for one don't consider it a "fantasy issue'' or that "none of this is about real world policy." If Biden loses it may very well be because of the border fiasco. Rightly or wrongly. Thousands and thousands of people who can, in fact, be described as 'illegal aliens" are pouring over the border with no end in sight, and the Dems want to pretend it doesn't matter that much. They are whistling past the grave yard. Trump's basic attitude is he can pick and choose which laws are laws for him. We shan't.You are talking about policy, Repugs are fantasizing about machine guns. IMHO, this is very serious and a monumental issue. The threat of violence is violence. And violence is the back up plan of the Troglodytes. We're being reminded of it every day. It's their ace in the hole and we should be talking about it every day. The border mess has the potential to be the spark. For the Troglodytes, that's a noted feature, not a flaw.

Please provide references to non-hate-group sources that illegal immigrants are rapidly increasing this year, and also that how this is an actual problem.

Even using CIS data, it's not clear to me how a population increase of 0.3% is worrisome.

All that matters for 2024 is whether these "attacks" will convince enough normie persuadable voters, or not. It's not out of the question that a deal on border security might help Joe with this voter cohort. But there are obviously no guarantees.

To me the big problem with a border security compromise with the GOP is that it's pretty unlikely to get through Congress: as Kevin's own post makes clear, Republicans are extremely reluctant to participate in anything that could be construed as a legislative win for Joe Biden.

That's some hot content right there. It's no wonder the political press loves them. Old Man Joe is constantly talking about jobs and other boring things.

  5. NotCynicalEnough

Nice to see a Republican admitting that the correct way for justices to interpret the constitution is in the way that lets them repay favors.

"I can fake being smart." -- Alina Habba

The implication here is that she knows she can fake it because, well, she's got experience doing it.

And yet, the REAL problem is the ones who DON'T say these things, who often cringe slightly at them, but STILL VOTE REPUBLICAN because something something Hillary something Alexandria Ortega Castro something socialism something WELFARE for THOSE people something my taxes something.

The "swing vote" is so-called "moderate Republicans." And far too many of them are willing to overlook the obvious and count on not being targets of the mob, because after all they're not Jewish non-White immigrants, and who believes all that silly talk about camps being a "dictator" anyway?

I'm for listening to the other side, in spirit, but I give zero Fs for the words of traitors and those who support them. These folk have shown us their character and it's despicable. We don't need to treat them like respectable opposition any longer.
