Lunchtime Photo

Once again, you get two photos for the price of one! I took both of these on New Year's Day in lieu of watching football games I wasn't really interested in. The top photo is a picture of a brilliant orange liquid amber tree with the morning sun behind it. The bottom photo is a closeup of some backlit leaves.

I believe those are western sycamore (Platanus racemosa), rather than liquidambar (Liquidambar sp.). The shapes of the leaves are similar in the two, but the bark is very different, and the bark in the first photo looks very much like sycamore bark.

It could also be a transplanted Arizona sycamore (P. wrightii).

Sycamore and liquidambar both have roughly spherical, dingle ball fruit, but the sycamore balls are soft and somewhat fluffy, while the liquidambar balls are very tough, spiny, and painful to step on.
