Two views of the Château Gaillard, overlooking the Seine in Les Andelys. The top view was taken on our way out from Paris; the bottom view was taken on the trip back.

Imaginez votre vie dans un tel château...
L'assurance de santé ? Les opportunités d'éducation ? L'eau propre ?
Mais la vue...

That was a beautiful place until the vampires were discovered and the locals destroyed it.

Neighborhood just hasn't been the same since the Lionheart's day . . .

Reminds me of a castle in Austria, converted into a hotel, that I stayed in a long time ago. When you entered the room, there was an outside stone wall with ordinary looking curtains that were closed. When you opened the curtains, however, instead of a normal window, there was an arrowslit, about two inches wide.

Gothic! Or, according to google translate: Gothique !
That place is going to be at the bottom of the hill some day soon.

What these tell you is how violent that world must have been for people to climb those steep hills every night to be safe.
I've seen many of these in southern France with a cramped village inside the walls and farmland in the valley. A hard climb that must have been worth your life.
That's what happens when there's no government, with gangs of fighting men roaming around and living by stealing from the peasants.

Ah, the romance of feudalism! That is, if you were part of the roving gangs of fighting men. The modern obsession with sword'n'sorcery fantasy is ... just weird.
