Lunchtime Photo

This is a very sociable horse that I met in Colorado. All the other horses ignored me, but this one cantered right up and let me stroke her face. I felt kind of guilty that I didn't have an apple or something to give her.

I think that's a mare, though I'm not completely certain. She's kind of ugly, and also adorable.

Stroking the neck is also something that is likely to be appreciated. Possibly even scratching behind the ears. They are a bit like really big dogs in some sense. At least as smart, if not quite so needful of your approval.

I made the mistake of giving my horse a carrot when I first got him. For the next 20 years his nose was all over me looking for a carrot treat. I would "pop" him in the nose but he never changed. My wife's Rocky just wants to get his nose it what ever you are doing. Her Arab mustang cross mare was aloof but a great trail horse. Sad have to let her go at 35.

I worked as a transport orderly in the early 70's. I guy came into the ER with a nice bite on his face via Trigger. Just sayin.

That horse has a beautiful color. I dunno, I like it.

I discovered when young (4th/5th grade) most horses will accept a big handful of grass (hay?) - just pick it from right next to them, present a nice little bundle, held in front of them. They’ll eat it, even though they coulda picked it themselves.

My somewhat limited experience is that the grass on your side of the fence will be considered a welcome treat. The same grass is on the horse's side of the fence, but it is considerably shorter since the horse keeps eating it.
